The scanner on my HP Office Jet Pro 8028 stopped working.  I have turned it off and on a few times, but that has not helped.

If the scanner on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8028 has stopped working and restarting hasn't resolved the issue, here are a few troubleshooting steps that can help:

 

1. Check for Error Messages

Look at the printer's display panel. If there are any error messages, note them down as they might provide clues about the problem.

 

2. Test Scanning via Software

Open the HP Smart app or HP Scan Software on your computer.

Try initiating a scan through the app to determine whether the issue is with the physical scanner or the connection/software.

 

3. Inspect Physical Components

Check the scanner glass for any smudges, debris, or physical damage. Clean the glass with a lint-free cloth and a small amount of non-abrasive cleaner.

Ensure the scanner lid closes properly and isn’t obstructed.

 

4. Reinstall Printer Drivers

Outdated or corrupted drivers might cause scanning issues:

Remove the current printer drivers:

On Windows: Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners, select your printer, and click Remove Device.

On macOS: Open System Preferences > Printers & Scanners, select the printer, and click the minus (-) button.

Download the latest drivers from the HP Support website. Official HP® Drivers and Software Download | HP® Support

Reinstall the printer, ensuring the correct driver is installed.

 

5. Update Printer Firmware

HP regularly releases new firmware versions for printer enhancements, app updates, or issue fixes. Update the firmware regularly to get the most out of your printer.

6. Reset the Printer to Factory Settings

A factory reset can clear internal glitches:

Access Settings > Printer Maintenance > Restore Defaults from the printer's display panel.

Reconfigure your printer after the reset.

 

7. Use HP Print and Scan Doctor

HP provides a free tool called HP Print and Scan Doctor to diagnose and resolve printing and scanning problems. 

 

Download and run HP Print and Scan Doctor from the link below to quickly and automatically perform several troubleshooting tasks known to resolve this issue.

8. Test with a Different Device

If possible, try scanning from another computer or smartphone connected to the printer. This can help determine if the issue is with the printer or the device you're using.
