Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

Welcome to the HP Community Forum.

Simple updates -

  • Replace the words "This process" with the name of the Application Frame Host process
  • Clarify when to try the "Reset HP Smart" fix

Application Frame Host process is a Windows process that is apparently responsible for "framing" an application, that is, providing a Window in which the application can run.

The Application Frame Host process is not directly related a specific application.

When the Application Frame Host fails to work as expected, the failure can impact your application, but the Frame Host is not necessarily a direct part of the application that fails.

An easy to read article on the subject written by How-To Geek:

What Is “Application Frame Host” and Why Is It Running on My PC?

Most of what I can find on the 'net reflects much the same advice, including

  • Checking / updating Windows Updates
  • Check / Repair Windows
  • Reset Windows

What else?

After checking / running "Windows Update",

Try / Consider

If you are running Fast Start,

Switch off the Fast Start option

Shut down the computer

Wait a few seconds

Start the computer and log in

Switch off / on Fast Start

Fast Start uses a "saved configuration" to more quickly start your computer.

This is great until / if "something" is saved that should have been discarded during the boot sequence.

Switching off the option forces the computer to boot from the Windows Operating System and File System on the disk.

Windows 10

Settings   > System > Power and Sleep > Additional Power Settings

Choose what the power buttons do

Click Change settings that are currently unavailable

Remove Check (clear box) Turn on fast startup (recommended)

Save Changes

Windows 11 or Windows 10

Control Panel > icon view > Power Options

Choose what the power buttons do

Click Change settings that are currently unavailable

Remove Check (clear box) Turn on fast startup (recommended)

Save Changes

Next,

Close programs (for example, browsers, games, email) and close any open windows

Next,

Windows key + X + A (opens Cmd prompt as Admin)

Next,

When the command window opens, type / paste the following command and hit Enter:

shutdown /s /t 0

  • Wait for the computer to shut down completely (a few seconds)
  • Boot the computer > Log in > Wait around for a couple of minutes (yes, wait, do not rush) >
  • Try shutting down the notebook from Windows key > Power

Optional - whether or not you get the results you want ---

Switch ON the fast startup setting.

Dragon-Fur NOTE:

  • Business Notebooks > Fast Boot setup may be enabled / disabled in the BIOS

Shut down the workstation > Power on, immediately tap-tap-tap F10 to enter the BIOS >

Advanced > Boot Options >

Check / Uncheck Fast boot > Save and exit

OR

Elevated command prompt - run the following command:

REG ADD "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Power" /V HiberbootEnabled /T REG_dWORD /D 0 /F

What else?

After Windows Updates has been checked / run,

After Fast Start is stopped and the system is rebooted,

If the application that is failing is the HP Smart application,

you could try the procedure to Reset HP Smart.

Consider

Restart everything, including the router that controls your network.
