My new scanner recognizes that I have put papers in the top dispenser, but it then scans the (empty) glass. It recognizes and prints on the copy function, but not the scan function.

Hi,
Are you scanning from the printer front panel?
Such behavior would likely occur due to using Windows WSD Scan services from the printer front panel.
Search your PC and open Windows Fax and Scan, then click on Scan on the bottom right-side of the window.
Click Tools > Scan Settings and any scan profile appears.
Edit any listed Scan Profile of your printer and change its Source to Feeder.
Confirm the changes and try scanning from the printer front panel again, it should now scan using the feeder and not the Flatbed Glass.

Thank you for your assistance. Yes it is a front panel. I found Windows Fax and Scan.
The "Tools" tab is actually on the top bar. I adjusted it as you suggested and it is now recognizing the feeder. Unfortunately, if I ever want to use the flatbed glass, I have to change it every time, or just always use the feeder.
Ironically, my (very) old printer/scanner automatically recognized either/or, but it only had 2 choices because it only scanned one sided documents. My new one has 3 choices: flatbed, feeder (1 sided), and feeder (2 sided). The fact that there are 3 choices instead of 2 is likely the reason for the fact that I have to choose. Oh well, I can deal with that! At least now I know how to change it.
Thanks again!

Hi,
while using HP Smart, only WSD scanning capabilities are offered from the printer front panel, however you may achieve your needs using the HP Scan software:
Download and follow HP Easy Start below to install the full feature software and complete the software installation:
Once completing the installation open your printer icon added to the desktop and open the Scan tab, then click on Manage Scan to Computer and enable the feature.
Now select the HP Software from the printer, it will appear as your PC name only (e.g computer1 and not Save to computer1, this will auto detect the scanner source from either the Flatbed or the Document Feeder.
