Can't get my printer to scan documents.  I have loaded scan software several times.  I use my Desk PC. not a phone to look for answers, it's easier for me to read and follow.  Using Wi-Fi Direct.  Never have seen the Wireless light on my control panel either!  Where is it?

Hi @Gaze-75

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how inconvenient it feels when scanning doesn’t respond, especially after you’ve already tried reinstalling the software.

You’ve put in good effort, and I’ll walk you through clear steps so you can get scanning working smoothly from your Windows PC.

Steps to check and resolve scanning issues:

Confirm Wi-Fi Direct Connection

  • On your printer, press the Wireless button or look for a Wi-Fi Direct icon. Depending on the model, the light may be near the control panel or on the front edge.
  • If the light is off, press the Wireless button for a few seconds until it starts blinking. This indicates the printer is broadcasting Wi-Fi Direct.
  • On your PC, open Wi-Fi settings, and connect directly to the printer’s Wi-Fi Direct network (it usually appears as “DIRECT-xx-PrinterName”). Enter the password shown on the printer’s display or information sheet.

Check HP App Installation

  • Make sure you are using the HP App (HP Smart has been replaced).
  • Download or update it from the Microsoft Store.
  • Open the app, click “Printers,” and add your printer again while connected via Wi-Fi Direct.

Verify Windows Scan Settings

  • In the HP App, select “Scan.”
  • Place the document on the scanner glass or in the feeder.
  • Choose “Scan to Computer” and ensure your PC is listed as the destination.
  • If the scan does not start, check that your PC firewall or antivirus is not blocking the HP App.

Run Diagnose & Fix

  • Open the HP App, go to “Printer Settings,” and select “Diagnose & Fix.”
  • This tool will automatically check for connectivity and driver issues and repair them.

Update Printer Drivers and Firmware

  • Visit this official HP page to download the latest drivers and firmware for your printer: HP Software and Driver Downloads
  • Enter your printer model, download the full feature software, and install it.

Once you’ve followed these steps, the wireless light should indicate activity when Wi-Fi Direct is active, and scanning should work directly from your PC.
