Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

I don't scan often.  However, each time I've done so in the past couple of year or so, I see that the scan to computer from printer (and initiate scan from computer) options are gone.  In the past, I've been able to, eventually, find a solution and get, at least, the initiate from computer option to work.  Typically, this has been done by unistalling the software and reinstalling from the original disk that came with the unit.  Apparently, the updated driver & setup download from HP no longer includes a scanning component.

I recently "upgraded" to Windows 10.  I'm trying t scan again, and everthing I try is failing.  Even the IRIS whatever isn't working.  I've tried entering the IP Address that brings up the setup & assistant web site, and going through the Network Forlder Setup (both wirelessly & wired).

I uninstalled the software again, and tried to reinstall using the original disk.  Seems like the disk is not compatible with Windows 10.  I got an error message that said it can only be used with Windows XP version whatever & higher, Vista, & Win 7.

So, does this mean that there is no longer a way to have "onboard" scanning capability with an HP Printer?  Or has anyone found a solution that doesn't use cloud-based scanning?  No one needs to see, copy, store, or have access to my private papers, except me.

Hi,

Thanks for using the HP forum.

The Disk that came with the printer doesn't support Win 10 ( WIn 10 came out later than the printer)

Can you download and install the FULL feature printer software from HP for your operating system (WIndows 10):

http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-officejet-pro-8500a-e-all-in-one-printer-series-a...

Once you have downloaded and installed the FULL feature software, you will be able to print and scan.

How to Scan to Computer

Once you have installed the software:

1. Click on the printer Icon (on your desktop) and it will bring up the HP Printer Assistant.
2. Under the Scan menu, there is a “Manage Scan to Computer”, click on that.
3. Make sure that you “Enable” Scan to Computer. Also make sure the tab “Automatically start Scan to Computer when I log on to Windows” is checked if you want to make this feature permanent. (the following video will show you how)

Thanks!  The download worked, and I was able to complete my scan.  I've saved the download webpage.  Hopefully it will still be up if I have problems the next time I need to scan something (like in a year or two) 🙂
