HP ENVY 6055e All-in-One Printer

While testing the resolution and quality of my HP Envy 6055e scanner I've noticed JPEG block artifacts and ringing/sharpening artifacts on lossless 1,200 dpi (PNG/BMP/TIF) Scan's.  The artifacts appear even on blank sections of the scanned paper.  Firmware is up to date.

Happens on Windows 10/11, iOS and using HP Smart.  -  I still need to try the EWS Scan and MacOS, but I wouldn't expect any different quality if the printers firmware is doing the compressing*.

*It appears the printer sends the scanned file compressed (to whatever device/app requests it).  The JPG quality level isn't even that high... at least increase it to 100% HP...

Hi @uiphigb087y3gtr,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

JPEG blocking and ringing artifacts typically occur due to compression, which can result in a loss of image quality. However, if you are experiencing these artifacts on a lossless 1200 dpi scan in PNG format, it's possible that the issue is related to the scanning process itself.

Here are a few things you can try to improve the quality of your scans.

  • Clean the scanner glass: Dust and debris on the scanner glass can cause artifacts in your scans. Use a soft, lint-free cloth and a gentle cleaner (such as isopropyl alcohol) to clean the glass before scanning.
  • Check the scanner settings: Make sure that the scanner is set to scan at 1200 dpi and that the color settings are appropriate for the document you are scanning.
  • Adjust the image settings: Many scanning software applications have built-in image adjustment tools that can help improve the quality of your scans. Look for settings that can reduce artifacts like noise reduction, edge enhancement, and sharpening.
  • Try a different file format: Although PNG is a lossless file format, it may not be the best choice for all types of images. Try scanning in a different format (such as TIFF or RAW) to see if the artifacts are reduced.
  • Consider a different scanner: If you've tried all of the above and are still experiencing artifacts in your scans, it may be time to consider a different scanner. Look for a scanner that has a high optical resolution, good color depth, and minimal noise levels to ensure the best possible image quality.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
