Hi @iobdennis,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand you trying to scan a legal-sized document using your Officejet Pro 8600 on a Mac, but you need guidance on the steps to get it done properly. Let’s walk through it together.

Option 1: Using HP Smart (Recommended)

  1. Download and install HP Smart (if you haven’t already) from the Mac App Store.
  2. Open HP Smart.
  3. Click Scan.
  4. Set Source to Document Feeder.
  5. Set Paper Size to Legal (8.5 x 14 inches).
  6. Adjust the Color Mode, Resolution, and File Type as desired.
  7. Click Scan.
  8. Save the scan to your computer in your chosen location and format.

Option 2: Using Preview (Built-in on macOS)

  1. Open Preview.
  2. Click File > Import from Scanner > HP OfficeJet Pro 8600.
  3. In the Scanner window:
    • Set Scan Mode to Document Feeder.
    • Set Paper Size to US Legal.
  4. Choose Color Mode, Resolution, and File Type.
  5. Click Scan.
  6. Save the scanned file when prompted.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
