HP ENVY Inspire 7958e All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I got an HP 7900 inspire e series printer/scanner to scan my photos. The top feed tray will allow you to put 4X6 photos in the tray loading only by the 6" side of the photo, however if the photo was originally taken as a portrait photo it will not scan the picture as it would if it were a taken in landscape mode.  So when you print the photo it does not even cover the 4X6 on the photo paper.  I'm not sure how the scanner know that the picture was taken as a portrait or not as you can feed a mix through the tray at once and the landscape again are fine.

If you feed the picture into the tray from the 4" side of the photo it will scan and print properly. But there is not a guide to feed the photos in the top tray so they go in crooked.  Anyone out there know how to address this issue.

Also I tried to CROP but then you loose the sides of the photo.

Thanks in advance

It is totally depending on how you load the originals. You can always rotate scanned photos which ever way such as left or right 90°.

You are saying "If you feed the picture into the tray from the 4" side of the photo it will scan and print properly. But there is not a guide to feed the photos in the top tray so they go in crooked" that means you have to rotate scanned photos. Which software do you use to print ? You can use that software to rotate or using the following free software

Thank you so much for the reply, but I have tried that and it still only fills half of the 4X6 paper. It is so strange as I said a landscape works fine. I am using the HP software. I am inclined to take the printer back.

Please disregard this as I found the solution, there is an option in the HP Smart software that will automatically flip the picture for you at the paper size you selected when you scanned! Two days of looking to find this 😞 but yeah, found it 🙂
