HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 4302fdw Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

Why does LaserJet Pro MFP 4302 only allow you to set max 300 dpi scanning resolution in 'Quick Set' yet when you select this Quick Set from the device screen you can go into the DPI setting and select 600. Its VERY frustrating.

If the device can support 600 dpi then it should be selectable from the drop down menu when setting up a Quick Set.

Am I missing something.?

Welcome to the HP English Community --

I am sorry you are frustrated.

After a quick check, I believe the limitation in the Quick Sets is perhaps because there is no place in the Quick Set Profile to select the source -- Glass or ADF (Automatic Document Feeder).

Regardless of whether a particular printer provides both options, Glass or ADF are generally legitimate choices on a printer that supports the hardware (both flatbed / glass and ADF).

Without a method (in the Quick Set) to select the source (Glass or ADF), the default -- and only choice available in the Quick Set Profile -- is to support a selection that would not violate the scan DPI maximum for the least capable source, that is, the ADF (at 300 dpi).

Why made like this?

Quick Sets must work for a wide variety of hardware types -- to make that happen, certain printer specific features must be either addressed individually or left out of the code used to build the Quick Set Profiles.

Yeah, but -- I want it.

Code can do anything, though sometimes at the expense of size, speed, cost, and / or efficiency.

Companies make choices.

When you are at the printer and invoke the Quick Set for a job that will use the Flatbed / Glass, the higher DPI choices are available.

To summarize, the ADF only supports 300DPI, you need to scan from the glass to scan at higher resolutions. This is due to the limitations of paper control when using the ADF, where the image is scanned as it moves through the feeder and not stationary as it is on the glass.

Hi, thanks for your help. Accept everything you say. As an x techie I decided to experiment. Its interesting that if you put paper in the ADF and then setup a job from the printer console then it does only offer 300dpi. HOWEVER, if you setup up the scan job before you put the paper in the ADF it offers 600dpi. If you select 600 and then put the paper in the ADF it will then take the paper from the ADF and scan it at 600 dpi. Interesting!!!!

The only issue I had was that when the printer was working on WIFI it did abort jobs larger than 17 pages, but connected by wire it worked ok. I assume this was it was struggling with data volume and speed of writing to network storage. I'll have to see if doing it to USB has any limitations.

But you are absolutely right. When writing the code you have to write for guaranteed success for the device.

It would be nice if you could set up an Quick task for 600 for flatbed or ADF. We can all wish.

Thanks again for input
