Scanning Results In Huge File Size

I recently installed my HP Office Jet 3830 and have scanned a few documents and photos.  The resulting scans are in .BMP format and are huge (i.e. 11.6 MB).  How can I use this scanner to produce scanned documents in .JPG format which are much smaller in file size ?

Please try this scan solution:

HP Scan Extended

For Windows:   ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/scanners/HPScanExt/HPScanExt.msi

Once downloaded and installed, go to Start > All Programs > HP > HP Scan Extended > Run "HP Scan Extended"

Check all your settings and expand all tabs and all + signs to see all options that available.

Thanks for the response.  I'll try to follow your instructions but keep in mind that I am about to turn 73 in a couple of months and am not very confident about my abilities to do this.  I'll let you know.

Well I'll be darned, it worked and I scanned a photo with a file size of 83 kb instead of 11 mb.
