Hi @Lolla1984,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand how frustrating it must be when your printer scans everything as black, especially when printing works just fine. Let's figure this out together!

Could you please share the model name of your printer? That will help in providing more precise troubleshooting steps.

Meanwhile, here are some general steps you can try:

1. Restart the Printer & Check for Firmware Updates

  • Turn off the printer, unplug it for about 60 seconds, and then plug it back in.
  • Check if there's a firmware update available for your printer from HP's official support page.

2. Clean the Scanner Glass & ADF Feeder

  • Dust, smudges, or ink residue on the scanner glass or Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) can cause scanning issues.
  • Use a lint-free cloth and a bit of glass cleaner to gently wipe the scanner glass and white strip under the ADF lid.

3. Try a Different Scan Mode & Resolution

  • If using HP Smart or Windows Scan, try adjusting the scan type to grayscale instead of color.
  • Lowering the DPI (dots per inch) from 300 to 150 might also help.

4. Check Scanner Bulb Functionality

  • When scanning, do you see the scanner light moving under the glass?
  • If the scanner bulb isn’t turning on, it could indicate a hardware issue.

5. Test with a Different Computer or App

  • Try scanning from a different computer or using the HP Smart app to see if the issue persists.
  • If you’re using third-party scanning software, test with HP’s built-in software instead.

Let me know your printer model and what you’ve tried so far, and I’ll be happy to assist further!

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
