Do I have to pay $59 per year to be able to scan a document on my brand new HP Officejet Pro 9135e.  I don’t want to join the app or use my phone. I simply want to scan a document to an email address .  I don’t feel I should have to subscribe to an HP app to do that.  Had I know that I would have NEVER purchased this unit.

Nope, scanning is free, printing is free, you need to buy the ink and paper.
