HP Smart Tank 5000/5100 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I am so fed up with not being able to scan with my Smart 5100 printer that I just want to throw it in the trash.  I can print over my network but when I go to scan, it says the printer can't be found.  How come it can be found to print but not to scan?

Hi @Fedup37,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I completely understand your frustration—being able to print but not scan makes no sense.

let’s try a few quick fixes:

Check HP Smart & Windows Scan

  • Open the HP Smart app and try scanning. If it fails, try Windows Fax and Scan (search for it in the Start menu).

Restart the Printer & PC

  • Power off both the printer and your computer, then restart them and try scanning again.

Reinstall the Printer in Windows

  • Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners
  • Remove the HP Smart Tank 5100 printer.
  • Restart the PC and re-add the printer.

Try Scanning via the Embedded Web Server (EWS)

  • Find your printer’s IP address (Control Panel > Devices and Printers > Right-click on your printer > Properties)
  • Enter the IP in a web browser to open the printer’s settings.
  • Look for Webscan and try scanning from there.

Disable “Scan to Computer” in HP Smart and Re-enable It

  • Open HP Smart
  • Go to Printer Settings > Scan Settings > Scan to Computer
  • Disable and then re-enable it.

Check Firewall & Antivirus

  • Temporarily disable your firewall or antivirus and try scanning again.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
