I use remanufactured ink cartridges and have for a long time without issue.  I have always wondered why if your ink cartridge(s) is depleted, why you can't scan anything.  Right now the printer refuses to recognize the Black XL cartridge and I've gone through all the steps, removing it, replacingit, turning printer on and off, unplugging, restarting the computer to no avail.  I have a lot of scanning to do and it is important because it has to do with my medical issues and I'm running out of options and I cannot afford a new printer.

Hi @Le1ghanne,

I reviewed the post I understand where you come from. Great troubleshooting, tremendous effort and diagnosis to try and resolve the issue though. It is a hardware issue with the printer. Hey there! @Le1ghanne, Thanks for stopping by HP forums!

I understand you have issues scanning because the ink is depleted on your printer.

Don't worry I'll try to help you out.

I appreciate your efforts for trying out the steps before reaching out to us.

Did you make any changes to your printer?

Are you able to make a copy from your printer?

Do you get any error on the printer control panel?

If you are getting an error on the printer control you will not be able to initiate the scan from the printer control panel.

However, You should be able to initiate a scan from the printer software or EWS  page.

Refer this article to know how to scan from printer software or EWS page.

I'll keep an eye out for your response.

I hope you have a great day! 🙂

I haven't made any changes to the printer, I just haven't used it for awhile because the ink was depleted, and I couldn't afford to get new ones.  The message is that the Black XL cartridge is either damaged or missing, so I can't print or make copies either.  Then I bought new ones and even took the same cartridge back and got a replacement again, but it still won't work.

@Le1ghanne, Thanks for your quick response and time.

I appreciate your efforts for trying out the steps.

As you mentioned you are getting black XL cartridge is either damaged or missing error.

Please try the steps recommended below.

Clean the cartridge contacts

Remove and reinsert the ink cartridge or ink cartridges indicated in the error message. Make sure that the cartridges are inserted correctly.
If the printer is off, press the Power button to turn on the printer. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the access area.
Press the tab on the front of the cartridge in to release it, and then pull up on the cartridge to remove it from the slot.
If an orange pull tab is still attached, remove it.
Make sure that you remove the orange pull-tab and plastic wrap completely. Otherwise, ink might leak from the cartridge. When you remove the plastic wrap, the paper label on the top of the cartridge tears slightly, which is necessary to properly vent the cartridge.
With the nozzle and contacts facing down, slide the cartridge into its slot. Press down on the cartridge until it is firmly seated.
Repeat these steps to inspect any other cartridges indicated on the control panel.
Close the cartridge access door.

Refer this article to further troubleshoot ink cartridge issues.

Hope this helps!

Have a great day ahead! 🙂
