Thanks and pleased to help, I see others are not seeing as much success which is a shame.
I'm shocked that HP have not released an update to the 'HP Smart' app, it appears that they don't care that this type of issue massively impacts their brand name but there you go.

Agreed, DaveyWRX, the lack of a real fix from the provider is disappointing. It will certainly make me think twice about my brand preferences next time I go printer shopping ... which would have been this weekend, had this work-around not worked.

I have tried everything suggested and my printer will scan and then an error message appears on top of the scan that says "There's a problem loading your Smart Task. Please try again." And yes, I did enable the Smart Task. So basically my printer will only print now and I need the scanner.

Thanks for everyone's input, I've got exactly the same problem and gave up on the HP Smart Software.
My solution was to find other scanning software. And I've come across HP Scan and Capture in the Windows store. Useful that it's HP - so not much new in the way to learn, and seems to function in much the same way at the scanning part of HP Smart, and it allows multiple scans to save into one PDF, which is what I needed! Hope this helps.

Just a quick update to say I was contacted by HP regarding a different issue and mentioned this one too.
The Tech reported that HP were aware of it and were hoping to address it in the future.
They also allowed for a free 'Instant Ink' month for the trouble - better than nothing I guess.
