Hi possible helper,
Scanning keeps interrupting with the message: "Scan canceled. Scanning was canceled from the scanner." I scanned with the lid open, and the scanner lamp moved from top to bottom, but not all at once.
The virtual assistant doesn't understand my question.
Copying and printing work fine.
My account for my device shows: Expired. Does this affect the warranty, or can I no longer get help with my HP ENVY 4520?
Thanks in advance for your answer.

Hi @Suus1
Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.
When encountering issues where scanning is interrupted with a message indicating that the scan was canceled from the scanner, there are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the issue.
Ensure Connectivity:
- Make sure your printer is properly connected to your computer or network. Check that any network cables are securely connected if you are using a wired connection, or ensure a strong Wi-Fi signal if wireless.
Check the Lid and Scanner Glass:
- Ensure that the scanner lid is closed properly. If the lid is open during scanning, it might cause interference.
- Clean the scanner glass to ensure there are no obstructions or smudges that could affect performance.
Restart Your Printer:
- Turn off your printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for about 30 seconds, and then plug it back in and turn it on. This can sometimes resolve temporary glitches.
Update Printer Software and Drivers:
- Ensure that you have the latest drivers and software for your HP ENVY 4520. Visit the HP Support website to download any available updates.
Check for Firmware Updates:
- Sometimes firmware updates can fix bugs and improve functionality. You can check if there are available updates through the HP Smart app or HP software installed on your computer.
Use HP’s Diagnose & Fix Tool
- In the HP Smart app, click Printer Settings > Diagnose & Fix.
- Let it run a scan—it will automatically fix common connection issues.
You can also access this tool on HP’s support page if needed.
Warranty and Support:
Regarding the message that your account shows as expired:
- An "expired" account notification typically affects services such as ink supplies or specific HP warranty and support services linked with a valid account. It does not directly impact your ability to seek standard technical support for hardware issues, such as the one you're experiencing with scanning.
- If your printer warranty has expired, you might still access limited support options, but comprehensive repair or replacement services may not be available without warranty coverage. You can still contact HP Support for assistance and explore other self-service options.

Take care, and have an amazing day!

Dear Hawks_Eye,
Thank you for your quick and detailed reply.
For clarity, you can find my answers in red after your directions.
I did what you mentioned in your first paragraph, but without success. As for the rest, after hours of searching, I found nothing.
Update the printer software and drivers: make sure you have the latest drivers and software for your HP ENVY 4520. Every time I click on "Software & Drivers PH ENVY4520," I end up on the same screen that asks me to identify and select my operating system (Windows 11) and the operating system version (24H2), but I can't enter or select it anywhere.
Go to the HP Support website to download available updates. I can't find any available updates on any of the pages I visit.
Check for firmware updates: where can I find them?
In the HP Smart app, click Printer Settings > Diagnose & Fix: I couldn't find it in HP Smart, even though I just checked it. It's the latest version.
I have a valid account.
It's probably clear by now that I'm a complete novice.
Could uninstalling and reinstalling the printer be a solution? And how would that work? Preferably an explanation with links to the pages where I need to perform the steps, because so far I haven't found anything you mentioned.
My Windows 11 wasn't an upgrade, but a purchase.
Until a few days ago, the printer worked fine, although I could only print in color via the USB cable; wirelessly, it only worked in black and white.
Is my explanation hopeless, or is there anything else I can try?
Thank you in advance,
A desperate Suus1

Dear,
I placed a book on the printer lid to smooth out the wrinkles in the photo I wanted to scan. It might have been too heavy for the scanner to move freely, because I was trying to scan a regular sheet of paper today (without a book on it), and it worked just fine.
Sorry... I apologize for the inconvenience my stupidity caused.
I couldn't follow the instructions in the private message because I kept getting stuck. My operating system version wasn't listed, so I couldn't get any further.
Another problem I have: I can only print in color via a USB cable. When I try to print wirelessly, there's no option between "black/white" and "color" under Printer Properties > Paper/Quality. When I print via USB, I do have that option. I painstakingly installed the printer under two different names, otherwise the wireless option would always only show "offline."
Thanks in advance,
Suus1
