HP OfficeJet 3833
Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan

Just set up my new printer and am trying to scan pictures. When I do, they scan as a full page with white edging around the picture. Wondering if there is a way to autocrop. I don't see an option to. On my previous HP printer when you scanned it gave you the option for document or photo and the photo always scanned to size.

Hello @jill_greene – Hope you are well 🙂

I understand you are facing while scanning pictures using your Officejet. Did you try using HP Easy Scan? You can easily crop the pictures by using the HP Easy scan feature.

If you are not using the HP Easy scan, get it from here: http://hp.care/2d4H9Ez

  • Once you have installed the app, scan using the HP Easy scan. You can follow the steps mentioned below:
  • Scan a document or photo into HP Easy Scan.
  • Click the thumbnail version of the scanned item you want to edit in the left panel. The item displays in the right preview pane.
  • Click Edit at the bottom of the window.
  • Click Adjust to change color settings, click Straighten to change the angle of the scan, and click Crop to change the scan to a standard or custom paper size or to crop out part of the scan.
  • Click Send to save the scan to a folder on the Mac, or to print the scan.
  • Click Save.

You can get the detailed instructions here: http://hp.care/2c8ckuS

Let me know how that goes. I’ll watch for your reply!

Good luck & Merry Xmas 🙂

Surely there is an easier way than to download another HP app??  Every other scanner I have owned cropped the blank space around the picture automatically.  So if I understand this correctly, all of my scanned pictures will have the surrounding blank space scanned as part of the picture, and I have to go into a separate cropping program in order to get rid of it.  Is this correct??

Hello @inquiringminds7

Thanks for reaching out!

I suggested downloading the HP Easy scan to provide a definite solution for the customer issue. The customer was scanning a picture that was on a white page and wanted to crop only the picture in the whole page. Hence, suggested a way crop the picture from the page.

If you install the HP full feature drivers for your printer, it will automatically come with HP Scan software which will help you scan easily. Ideally, this will scan/save the whole paper that you have scanned. You can crop out the unwanted area in the paper.

Hope this answers your questions, and have a nice day!

I installed the drivers for my printer.  HOwever, when I scan a 4x6 photo, the resulting scan is a full page...the photo in the upper right hand corner, with blank white space filling the remainder of the jpeg image.  With my past scanners, the scanner senses or "sees" the picture on the tray, and automatically crops out the blank area, but also produces a "preview" in which you can crop right there on the monitor screen if need be before producing the scanned image. (My past printer/scanners  I'm talking about are an old HP Officejet Pro, and an Epson all-in-one.)

Is this available with the HP Officejet 5744?

I cannot find it in the on-device menu when scanning.

Hello @inquiringminds7

All the steps mentioned above is for the MAC OS X.

The HP Scan software comes with the HP full feature drivers for Windows. If you are having issues, follow the steps below:

  • Unplug the USB cable from the printer and computer if present.
  • Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Officejet printer entries and uninstall them.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Now click on http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/printers/oj5740/OJ5740__Full_WebPack_1092.exe to download and install the printer drivers.
  • Connect the USB cable if prompted and follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation.

Once done, try scanning and check.

Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance.

Good luck 🙂
