HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer

I've a relatively new IMac24, purchased Nov. '23.  My issue is, the printer/scanner (HP OfficeJet Pro 6978) doesn't recognize my iMac in the scan mode.  What needs to be done to get it to recognize and send scanned materials to the computer...I'm using a Wi-Fi connection?  Your directions need be detailed and simple, as I'm 80+ and didn't grow up with this technology...I'm just struggling to use it.

Hi @Gossie2,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand the challenge of dealing with new technology, so I'll provide detailed, step-by-step instructions to help you get your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 to recognize your iMac for scanning. Let's get started.

Step-by-Step Instructions to Set Up Scanning on HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 to iMac

1. Ensure Printer and iMac are on the Same Wi-Fi Network

Check Printer Connection:

  1. On your printer, touch the Wi-Fi icon to check if it is connected to your Wi-Fi network.
  2. If it’s not connected, go to Setup > Network > Wireless Setup Wizard and follow the prompts to connect your printer to your Wi-Fi network.

Check iMac Connection:

  1. On your iMac, click the Wi-Fi icon in the upper-right corner of the screen.Make sure your iMac is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your printer.

2. Install the HP Smart App

  1. Open the App Store on your iMac.In the search bar, type HP Smart and press Enter.Click Get to download and install the HP Smart app.

3. Add Your Printer to HP Smart

  1. Open the HP Smart app on your iMac.Click on the + (plus) sign to add a new printer. The app will search for available printers. Select your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 from the list.Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup.

4. Enable Scan to Computer

  1. In the HP Smart app, click on the Printer Settings tab.Under Print & Scan, click on Scan Settings.Ensure that Scan to Computer is enabled. If there’s an option for Manage Scan to Computer, make sure it is turned on and set to start automatically.

5. Scanning a Document

  1. Place the document you want to scan face down on the scanner glass or face up in the document feeder.Open the HP Smart app on your iMac.Click on the Scan tile.Choose your scan preferences (e.g., document type, resolution).Click Scan. The scanned document should appear in the HP Smart app. From here, you can save it to your iMac.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
