Scanning using HP Smart Application stopped working with the latest software update (HP smart update May 4th 2021 & Mac Big Sur update 11.3.1 May 5th 2021).
Mac powerbook & HP 8720
When a document is scanned from the document feeder the scan application returns multiple duplicate pages.
5 page document scan produces a 78 page scan!
All software at latest update and worked fine until last updates. No issues with network, connectivity etc.

Hi Epiphany,
We already feedback this to HP Smart team. For the time being, you may try scanning using the Mac itself and please let me know the outcome.

Thanks Riley for the reply - I hope the HP Smart team will be able to fix the bug soon.
When I try to access the scanner using the standard Mac route you describe it generates the following error:
HP Scanner 3 (the driver file) generates a malware warning from the Mac OS and won't run or open.
There is no new driver download available on the HP website (all is built into HP smart now).
So in brief I can't scan via that route either. Guess I need to open a new thread for this problem too?

For the systems preferences scanning route - now after the printer is turned off, or loses wifi connection temporarily the same "HP Scanner 3 is malware" message is received, followed by "file cant be opened" error. So once again I cant scan from the printer by either route.
