I have a HP Chromebook. I have been using HP Smart for a long time to scan using my HP Laser Jet MFP. Through time HP Smart was hit-or-miss on allowing me to scan. Now it will not scan at all. The message says the feature is not available. I do see there are resources, but they are for Windows machines. I do have access to one. Even on that HP Smart will not allow me to scan. What do I need to fix/change to be able to scan using my Chromebook?

Update. I have spent time this afternoon trying to get the Windows laptop to be able to scan with HP Smart or any other application. The printer is connected. I can find no reason why the scanner feature is not recognized on the HP Laser Jet MFP. Looking for suggeartions.

Hi @la_perk,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're encountering an issue with scanning functionality on both your HP Chromebook and a Windows laptop. Here are some steps to help resolve the issue for both devices.
For HP Chromebook:
HP Smart App Reinstallation:
- Try uninstalling and reinstalling the HP Smart app on your Chromebook to resolve any software-related issues.
- Go to the Chromebook's app menu and find HP Smart.
- Right-click and select Uninstall.
- Reinstall HP Smart from the Google Play Store.
HP Scan and Capture via Chrome:
- You can try using the built-in Chrome app for scanning if HP Smart isn't working.
- Go to chrome://devices on your Chromebook.
- Find your HP printer in the Scanning section.
- Choose your printer, and you should be able to scan directly from there.
Clear Cache and Data:
- If you're still having issues, try clearing the app's cache and data:
- Open Settings on your Chromebook.
- Go to Apps and select HP Smart.
- Tap Storage and choose Clear Cache and Clear Data.
Check Printer Compatibility:
- Ensure that your printer's firmware is up to date, as older firmware might cause compatibility issues with scanning features on Chromebooks.
For Windows Laptop:
If you cannot scan on Windows even after troubleshooting, here's what you can try:
Check Printer Connection:
- Ensure that your printer is properly connected to the Windows laptop (via USB or network) and is set as the default printer.
HP Scan and Capture App:
- HP Scan and Capture is an alternative to HP Smart on Windows:
- Download and install HP Scan and Capture from the Microsoft Store.
- Open the app, and it should automatically detect your printer and allow you to scan.
HP Print and Scan Doctor:
- Run HP Print and Scan Doctor to diagnose and fix scanning issues:
- Download and install HP Print and Scan Doctor from HP's website.
- Follow the steps in the tool to automatically detect and resolve scanning issues.
Windows Scanner Settings:
- In Windows, you can use the Windows Fax and Scan app for scanning:
- Open Windows Fax and Scan from the Start menu.
- Click New Scan and ensure your printer is selected.

Check Device Manager:
- Make sure your scanner is properly recognized in Device Manager.
- Right-click on the Start Menu and select Device Manager.
- Under Imaging Devices, check if the scanner is listed and has no issues.
Reinstall Printer Drivers:
- Sometimes reinstalling the printer drivers can help:
- Uninstall the printer from Devices and Printers.
- Download the latest drivers from the HP website and reinstall the printer.
Note:
- Ensure Printer Firmware is Updated:
- Make sure your HP LaserJet M1536dnf's firmware is up to date. You can check for updates via the printer's web interface or the HP Smart app.
- Network Connection:
- Double-check the connection between your printer and your devices (Chromebook or Windows laptop). If you're using Wi-Fi, ensure the printer is connected to the same network.
If none of these solutions work, it might help to restart your router, printer, and devices to ensure everything is properly connected.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hello @Alden4,
Thank you for the suggestions. I tried HP Smart App Re-installation many times. I tried HP Scan, but it says there are no scanners available. I attempted to Clear Cache and Data, but I do not see an option to "Tap Storage and choose Clear Cache and Clear Data." Prior to receiving your reply, I was able to get the Windows laptop to scan again. I still cannot scan using the Chromebook.
Thank you.
