So, all good.
Yes, cropping is always an option - and means you can stick with the software you want to use, too.,
For those reading:
The following is an overly simplified example of using HP Scan and Capture > Crop
The actions have been condensed into the one screen - normally each operation opens a new display of the object, and the available options.
Scan_and_Capture_Crop_1
Happy Printing.

If you are using Windows 10 (and / or possibly Windows 7)
and
If you have installed the Full Feature Software for your printer
then
If you printer software includes the Scan menu option to "Detect Content on Page", the feature might (should) be able to "extract" your illustration from the original document page.
Place the sheet to be scanned on the flatbed (MIGHT work in the ADF but not tested)
Set the Source
Set the Scan to save as an image (JPEG) and set the page size to "Detect Content on Page"
Set / check other options
When ready, click Scan
Example
Officejet Pro 9025 - HP Scan > Detect Content on Page
9025_HP_Scan_Menu_1
OR...
If your printer software includes the "Detect Content on Page" but it does not work to extract the image
OR
If your printer software does not include the "Detect Content on Page" feature,
Then
You might be able to add and use the following "subset" printer software to "extract" the image from a document / page placed on the flatbed (printer glass).
HP Scan Extended
- Download-Save-Install > HP Scan Extended
- HPSE is a subset an older Full Feature Software suite.
- HPSE features are very similar to the HP Scan Software released after 2015.
- Although HPSE appears to be a separate software, HPSE is dependent on the infrastructure provided by the Full Feature Software. The Full Feature Software for your printer should be installed before installing HPSE.
- OPTIONAL: Add HP Scan Extended shortcut to Taskbar / Send to Desktop / Pin to Start
- Open File Explorer > Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\HP\HP Scan Extended\bin
- Right-Click exe > Select Pin to Taskbar / Send to Desktop / Pin to Start
- HP Scan Extended features include (and are not limited to): Single, Multiple scans, Image and PDF scans, Email as PDF / JPEG, Source selection, Page Size choices include Auto-Detect (extracts image / document boundary). May include OCR (Save as Editable Text).
In this software, the feature is called "Auto Detect Size"
This is a perfectly awesome capability, by the way.
Note that the HPSE software used to work along side the printer software in Windows 10 but HPSE is "old" by printer software standards and, at some point, it may stop working.
- Auto Detect / Extract Photos alone or in documents
Automatically detect and scan images from a document page
Scan multiple photos on printer glass: Detect and then create “separate” image files
- Select Option Page Size > "Auto Detect Size"
General Example
HP Officejet Pro 8630 - HP Scan Extended - Main Menu
HP_Scan_Extended_Shortcut_1

Thank you for those suggestions. HP Deskjet 2633 advices HP Smart and I cannot see any way of cropping the previewed image. It doesn't offer "detect content on page" I did download HPSE but without the Full feature Software, as you suggested, it doesn't work. Any more ideas? Thank you

You are correct, the HP Smart software does not include the auto-detect feature.
HP suggests using the HP Smart software because it is easy to install and simple to use. There are similar (but not the same) versions of HP Smart available for mobile printing. The intent is to somewhat streamline the sometimes complex task of document and image scanning and printing. Nice software.
HP Smart is a separate software from the more traditional Full Feature Software - while "Smart" is simple to use, it does not provide (in every case) all the features of which the printer is capable.
You are correct again,
HPSE is a subset of the Full Feature Software.
HP Scan Extended does not work without having first installed the Full Feature Software.
Other options?
Maybe.
The problem , if there is one, might be that "other" scan software may still, in the end, require that you have installed the Full Feature Software for the printer.

Thanks again! I have now discovered HP Scan and Capture which does have a crop facility and by trial and error I think I've found a way of doing what I wanted to do. It's not very intuitive (at least not to me) but I think I can cope! Thanks again for your help.
