We just purchased he HP 8710 and I am trying to figure out how to set up the printer to receive faxes.
I have only one phone line, and it is with TWC (bundled cable/internet/phone).
I have a phone splitter in the wall phone jack with one cable going into the phone modem and the other cable going to the printer. I am able to send a fax with no problem, but my problem is receiving an incoming fax. The only way I can receive a fax is if I am by the printer when the fax is being sent and select accept on the screen on the printer.
I know I am missing a step somewhere for incoming faxes, but not sure what it is. Do I need another device that will be able to detect if an incoming call is a fax?
Thanks for your help and ideas!

Hello, @LisaB44 – Greetings!
Thanks for reaching out! I would like to help 🙂
Going through your post, it looks like the “Auto answer” feature on your printer is turned off. I believe you can fix this issue by turning on this feature. Follow the steps below:
- On the printer control panel, touch “Fax”, touch “Fax Setup”, and then touch “Preferences”.
- Swipe down on the display, and then make sure “Auto Answer” is set to “On”. If “Auto Answer” is off, touch the toggle to turn it on.
You can check the detailed setup instructions here: http://hp.care/2gFD86a
Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance.
Cheers 🙂
