I am setting up my HP Envy 7640 to FAX. There is an answering machine on the same line. Instructions say to use a phone wire with 2 wire leads. I needed a longer phone wire to connect my answer machine to the printer and the only ones I could find have 4 wire leads. Can I use that to connect the answering machine to the printer?

Thanks for taking an interest in the HP Support Forums After reading your post I see that you want to know if you can setup the fax with four wire leads. I will be a delight to assist you here.
Superb analysis and brilliant diagnosis of the issue before posting. 🙂 Kudos to you on that score.:)
You can only use a cord with connectors that have two wire leads, not four.
Refer this HP Document for more assistance to setup Fax :- https://hp.care/2L6GKhc
Let me know if that helps.
Cheers.
