HP Office jet Pro 8600 N911g
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

We moved recently - I don't remember how my printer was set up to fax. I do know I could receive and send faxes without changing the telephone line. The landline would ring approximately 5 times and recognizing it was a fax coming in the "fax" machine would receive the fax.

I have an open plug on the back of my printer and my wall phone outlet is available. I have a landline. My landline is plugged straight from my landline phone into the modem.

Any help/advice or questions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you Raj1788 for your reply. I'm glad the links you sent me is exactly where I had looked previously and followed (or tried to).

My issue is:  I have a landline phone with an answer machine built in. My phone jack on my telephone is already being used.  It is hooked up to my modem per the installer of my internet/cable/landline service.  That option on your attached reply or the ones I've read don't address that type of set up.

What do I need to do?

Let's restore factory default fax settings.

Restore factory default fax settings

1. From the Home screen, touch (right arrow), and then select Setup.

2. Touch Fax Setup and then select Advanced Fax Setup.

3. Select Error Correction Mode.

Then run the fax setup wizard again to set up the fax.

Turn on auto answer

  • Turn on the Auto Answer setting if you want the printer to answer faxes automatically. The printer answers all incoming calls and faxes.
  • Turn off the Auto Answer setting if you want to receive faxes manually. You must be available to respond in person to the incoming fax call or else the printer does not receive faxes.

Make sure the rings to answer is set to 5.

Run Fax Test.

To test fax setup via the printer control panel

1. Set up the printer for faxing according to your particular home or office setup instructions.

2. Make sure the ink cartridges are installed, and that full-size paper is loaded in the input tray before starting the test.

3. From the printer control panel, touch (right arrow), and then select Setup.

4. Select Tools, and then select Run Fax Test. The printer displays the status of the test on the display and prints a report.

5. Review the report.

• If the test passes and you are still having problems faxing, check the fax settings listed in the report to verify the settings are correct. A blank or incorrect fax setting can cause problems faxing.

• If the test fails, review the report for more information on how to fix any problems found.

Again - Raj1788 - thanks so much for replying and asking me to reset to factory settings on my fax settings.  I will do that.

Before I do though - this still does not address the original issue.  Since my landline (which has a built in voice mail system) is directly plugged into my computer modem, where do I plug my telephone line into once I plug one end into the HP printer/fax?

To set up the printer with a computer DSL/ADSL modem

1. Obtain a DSL filter from your DSL provider.

2. Using the phone cord provided in the box with the printer, connect one end to the DSL filter, and

then connect the other end to the port labeled 1-LINE on the back of the printer.

NOTE: You might need to connect the supplied phone cord to the adapter provided for your country/region.

If you do not use the supplied cord to connect from the DSL filter to the back of the printer, you might not be able to fax successfully. This special phone cord is different from the phone cords you might already have in your home or office.

3. Connect the DSL filter to the parallel splitter.

4. Connect the DSL modem to the parallel splitter.

5. Connect the parallel splitter to the wall jack.

6. Run a fax test.

Hope this helps you out!
