Hi @JJD10,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Setting up scanning from an HP OfficeJet Pro 8740 to a computer involves ensuring that the necessary software and drivers are installed on your computer and configuring the printer settings correctly. Here's a general guide that should help you with the setup.

Install Software and Drivers:

  • Make sure you have installed the latest drivers and software for your HP OfficeJet Pro 8740. You can download them from the official HP website.
  • Visit the HP Support website, enter your printer model, and download the appropriate software for your operating system.

Connect the Printer to the Network:

  • Ensure that your HP printer is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your computer. Both devices must be on the same network for scanning to work seamlessly.

Enable Scan to Computer:

  • On the printer's control panel, navigate to the scan settings. This might be accessible through the touchscreen display on the printer.
  • Look for an option like "Scan to Computer" or "Scan to PC" and make sure it's enabled.

Check Firewall Settings:

  • Sometimes, firewall settings on your computer may block communication from the printer. Ensure that your firewall is not blocking the necessary ports for scanning.
  • You may need to add an exception for the HP software in your firewall settings.

Update HP Software:

  • Check for updates for your HP software. Outdated software can sometimes cause communication issues between the printer and computer.

Reinstall Software:

  • If you're still facing issues, try uninstalling the HP software from your computer and then reinstall it. This can resolve any corrupted installation issues.

Restart Devices:

  • Restart both your computer and the HP printer. Sometimes, a simple reboot can resolve connectivity issues.

Check for Multiple Devices:

  • Ensure that your computer is not running multiple instances of the HP software. This can sometimes cause conflicts.

Verify Network Connection:

  • Make sure your computer and printer are connected to the same network. Check the Wi-Fi settings on both devices.

Test from Another Device:

  • If possible, try initiating a scan from another computer to see if the issue is specific to one device.

HP Scan and Capture (Windows):

  • If you're using Windows, you can also try using the "HP Scan and Capture" app, which allows you to scan directly from the printer to your computer. Make sure it's installed and updated.

If you've gone through these steps and are still experiencing issues, you may want to refer to the specific user manual for your HP OfficeJet Pro 8740.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
