HP Smart Tank 7005 All-in-One
Microsoft Windows 11

My Smart Tank 7005 is permanently in sleep mode. I want to copy/scan but cannot get it out of sleep mode. Even in this mode it prints from my laptop and will scan (badly) using the windows scan app. I have shut down the printer by the button and by unplugging but no improvement. The only button that works in sleep mode is the i button that prints and information page about the printer. Print doctor also says printer is in sleep mode but prints the test page! Is there a fix for this problem or is it a return printer to HP?

Hi @eejay50,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

If your HP Smart Tank 7005 is stuck in sleep mode and unable to copy or scan properly, but still prints from your laptop, here are some steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

1. Check Printer Display Panel and Buttons

Wake Up the Printer:

  • Tap the printer's control panel or press any button other than the power button to try to wake it up from sleep mode. Ensure you are not pressing the power button, as this might turn the printer off.

Reset the Printer:

  • While you mentioned that you have shut down the printer by the button and unplugging it, try performing a reset:
    • Unplug the printer from the power source.
    • Wait for at least 60 seconds.
    • Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
  • Check if the control panel responds properly after the reset.

2. Update Printer Firmware

  1. Check for Firmware Updates:
    • Go to the HP Support website and check if there's a firmware update available for your HP Smart Tank 7005 printer.
    • If there is an update, follow the instructions on the website to download and install the new firmware. Updating the firmware can resolve software issues that cause the printer to remain in sleep mode.

3. Adjust Sleep Mode Settings

  1. Change Sleep Mode Settings:
    • Use the HP Smart app or your printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS) to adjust the sleep mode settings:
      • Open the HP Smart app and select your printer.
      • Go to Printer Settings > Preferences > Sleep Mode.
      • Adjust the sleep mode settings to a longer duration or disable it if possible.
    • Alternatively, access the EWS by entering the printer's IP address (found on the information page printed earlier) into a web browser:
      • Go to Settings > Power Management or Energy Settings.
      • Change the sleep mode settings.

Please find the remaining steps in the next post.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Hi @eejay50,

Please find the remaining steps below.

4. Use Printer Software for Scanning

  1. HP Smart App for Scanning:
    • Use the HP Smart app for scanning instead of the Windows Scan app, as it provides better integration with HP printers.
    • Open the HP Smart app, select your printer, and click on Scan to see if the scanner works correctly from there.

5. Perform a Factory Reset

  1. Factory Reset the Printer:
    • Performing a factory reset can help clear any software glitches:
      • Go to the Settings menu on the printer’s control panel.
      • Look for Restore Factory Defaults or Reset. Follow the prompts to reset the printer to its factory settings.
    • Be aware that this may reset all settings, including Wi-Fi configurations, so you may need to reconnect the printer to your network afterward.

6. Check for Hardware Issues

  1. Inspect the Control Panel:
    • Ensure that there are no physical obstructions or damage to the printer’s control panel buttons.
    • Gently press each button to ensure none of them are stuck or damaged.

By following these steps, you should be able to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue with your HP Smart Tank 7005 printer being stuck in sleep mode.

If the printer remains in sleep mode after trying all these steps, it may require repair or further assistance from HP Phonr Support.
