Officejet 8600 N911g
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

When the scanner jams during an Automated Document Feeder (ADF) scan I get a message that the scanner is jammed.  After clearing the jam, I click the Ok button.  The display then shows "Scan Canceled..." until either there is a power outage or I waste ink pulling the power plug.  Clicking the red X does nothing but make a beep sound.  Pressing Power button makes it say "Shutting Down"  but it doesn't ever shutdown.

Since this is behaviour of the network printer itself, I know that this is a firmware defect that HP choses to ignore.

Firmware Version: CLP1CN1829AR

Even though the firmware has not been updated in several years, it is the same version as was "supposedly" released 8/3/2018.  That is 1829A.

Hey there! @TexasNightOwl,

Try the steps recommended below.

Check the scanner bar functionality

Perform a visual test of the scanner mechanism to see if it is jammed.

  1. Remove any original documents or photos from the scanner glass.

  2. Lift the scanner lid slightly, and then press the Copy button or icon.

    • If the scanner light does not move, the scanner mechanism is likely jammed.

Download and run print and scan doctor on the PC and check if it helps.

Refer this article to know more information about using HP print and scan doctor. Click Here

Lastly, try restoring the printer to factory default and check if it helps. On the printer control panel select setup menu> Select Tools> Select Restore Factory Defaults from the list.

If the issue still persists after trying out the steps. It is a hardware issue with the printer. Please contact HP support for service options.

The printer is several years old and operates on the "it's paid for by the ink cartridges cost" model.  So it not worth the expense of paying for a tech support call.  The unit is not jammed because 1) I have cleared the jam before hitting the Ok button that locks it up in the cancelling scan routine and 2) after unplugging from the wall it works as usual without any further unjaming.

Print and Scan doctor don't work because the printer is locked up so nothing can communicate with the HP 8600.  This is not a new problem, it has existed at least 3 years.  I have tried resetting the HP 8600 a couple times plus it has had its firmware updated several times (not sure what has been doing the FW update because I don't explicitly update it).  I will give one more try at factory reset.

@TexasNightOwl,

Thanks for the quick update.

As the issue still persists after trying out the steps. Please try performing a semi-full reset on the printer and check if it helps.

As the steps to perform a semi-full reset is confidential and dedicated to your printer.

I will share the steps through a private message.

Please watch your inbox for more information.

Hope this helps!

Thanks.  I got the direct message.  As soon as I get my taxes out of the way I will load some documents in the ADF to jam it and give that a try.

The semi-full reset does not work.  Not only does it waste even more ink than cycling power, but it takes a lot longer.

@TexasNightOwl,

Thanks for the update.

As the issue still persists after performing a semi full reset on the printer.

It certainly sounds like a hardware issue with the printer.
