HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw
Microsoft Windows 11

I was trying to scan an important document and the interface would not let me click on any buttons, then it went black and I cannot get it to turn back on. The printer is connected and is turned on but I cannot access the buttons to choose options. It's black.

Sorry for delay, we got very busy. The light on the printer is ON but it won't do anything.

Hi @LadyJaneG,

Thank you for the response.

I understand your HP Color LaserJet MFP M283fdw is powered on but the control panel is completely unresponsive and the screen is black. Let’s go through steps to troubleshoot this.

Power cycle the printer
Turn off the printer completely and unplug it from the wall.
Wait 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on. This can clear temporary electronic glitches.

Reset the printer hardware
Press and hold the Power button for 10–15 seconds while the printer is unplugged to fully discharge any residual power.
Plug it back in and power on.

Disconnect peripherals
Remove any USB drives, external storage, or network cables temporarily.
Sometimes peripherals can cause the control panel to freeze.

Check for stuck buttons
Gently press all buttons on the control panel to ensure none are physically stuck, which can prevent operation.

Test network connection
Since the display is unresponsive, check if the printer is still accessible via HP Smart app or a computer on the network.
If it responds over the network, the problem is likely the control panel hardware rather than the printer core functions.

Firmware and driver
If you regain control via network, check HP Support > Software & Drivers for firmware updates.
Do not attempt updates while the control panel is unresponsive—it may fail mid-update.

I hope this helps.

We did all those steps, it still won't show as online and the touchscreen won't go on, The printer itself is turned on.

I am looking at possibly purchasing a new printer or at least a replacement one, but I do not know which  would be similar to this one, all have way too many different features. We no longer need fax option,  but unless I find a refurbished exact model I have, I don't think I have any other options. According to my son, the printer started acting extremely slow and none of the buttons would 'click' unless you pressed very hard. When I tried it on the day I first posted this, it was lit up and I was able to click on the option but it immediately went black before I could print.
