HP LaserJet Pro MFP M428fdw
Microsoft Windows 11

The automatic document feeder for my scanner on my HP LaserJet Pro MFP M428fdw leaves each page slightly askew in the HP software. If I scan the page manually, no problem -- perfectly aligned. What could be causing this? Is there some adjustment to the unit I could make, or do I need to take it in somewhere? The unit otherwise works great. Thanks.

@BHLlano,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The issue with your HP LaserJet Pro MFP M428fdw automatic document feeder (ADF) skewing pages during scanning is likely caused by one of the following.

Dirty or Worn ADF Rollers & Paper Path

  • Dust, debris, or worn rollers can cause pages to feed unevenly.
  • Solution:
    • Open the ADF cover and clean the rollers and separator pad with a lint-free cloth and isopropyl alcohol.
    • Allow it to dry completely before use.

Misaligned Paper Guides

  • If the paper guides are too loose or too tight, the pages won’t feed straight.
  • Solution:
    • Adjust the paper guides to fit snugly against the edges of the paper without squeezing.

Bent or Warped Input Tray

  • Over time, the input tray can warp, affecting how pages feed.
  • Solution:
    • Inspect the ADF input tray for any signs of warping or bending. If it’s damaged, consider replacing it.

Multi-feed or Uneven Pickup

  • If the ADF is pulling multiple pages at once or inconsistently, it can lead to skewed scans.
  • Solution:
    • Fan the paper before placing it in the ADF to reduce static cling.
    • Avoid wrinkled, torn, or curled pages.
    • Try scanning a smaller stack of pages.

Firmware or Software Issues

  • An outdated firmware version might cause scanning alignment issues.
  • Solution:
    • Update the printer firmware via HP Smart or the HP Support website.
    • Reinstall the HP Scan software to reset any settings.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

HAWKS_Eye: First, thank you for your detailed suggestions. Tried them all, but unfortunately I'm still getting the same result: pages that are skewed downward slightly but still noticeably on the right side. Although this printer-scanner is several years old, I've seldom used the ADF, and this problem is one reason why. The scanner itself works great when I plod through it one page at a time by hand. If you happen to have any more suggestions, I'd appreciate hearing from you. And sorry I took this long to get back to you, but I just now had time to work through these. Thank you again.
