Common problems HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to scan
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to Scan.
HP Recommended
OfficeJet Pro 8720
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have enabled "Scan to PC" (OfficeJet Pro 8720 All-in-one, on a home network) and it works fine. I want the Scan to PC function to be ON all the time, i.e. when Windows 10 starts so I have checked the box to start it every time. So far so good.

What I do NOT want is to see the pop-up at *every* single login to tell me it has been started. Why can't there be an option to start the ScantoPC function silently in the background??? VERY annoying to have to click the window off every.single.time.

I do not want to turn off other printer notifications, and I do not want to disable the ScantoPC at startup so that I have to install it/run it every time I need it. I like that it is there in the background. But why does there have to be a login message every time???

What am I missing????

I think perhaps you are not missing anything - you just don't like the way it works.

For the record, I do not particularly care for the scan to pc mechanism.

In my case, I use scan directly from the printer so infrequently, that I can shut off all the notifications, shut off the startup bits, and ignore it.  I do have a shortcut setup you can use (see below).

The "fixes" seem to be things you say you don't want to do.

For example:

Method - Switch OFF ScanToPCActivationApp Notification

  • Windows key SettingsPersonalization (Background, lock screen, colors
  • TaskBar Scroll down to Notification Area > Select which icons appear on the taskbar
  • Set OFF Always show all icons in the notification area (Allows notifications to be edited)
  • Scroll down
  • SwitchOFF ScanToPCActivationApp
  • If desired, Set ON   Always show all icons in the notification area

  or

Scan_to_computer_1Scan_to_computer_1

If you are willing to Disable / Enable the "Scan to Computer" setting (just before you use the feature on the printer), create a shortcut on the Desktop to control the "enable / disable" bits.

ScanToPCActivationApp Shortcut

Right-Click on Desktop > New > shortcut

Target / Path:

"C:\Program Files\HP\<Printer>\Bin\ScanToPCActivationApp.exe" –deviceID Printer Serial Number:NW -scfn "Printer (NET)"

Example:

"C:\Program Files\HP\HP Officejet Pro 8630\Bin\ScanToPCActivationApp.exe" –deviceID CN123EK45D:NW -scfn "HP Officejet Pro 8630 (NET)"

Double-click the shortcut > Enable > OK

Doubtle-click the shorcut > Disable > OK

Thanks so much for taking the time for a detailed reply. Bottom line is, just as you surmised/summarized, no I do not like the way it works 🙂

I think we are crossing wires a bit however. I already have the taskbar notification off (just as you outlined it). It is NOT the taskbar notification that is at issue. It is a window that pops up right in the middle of my desktop each and every time I log in that I must manually close. Every single time. It is just verifying the option I selected from the Printer Assistant. Why does anyone need to see this repeated at every login?

Screenshot 2018-12-31 20.04.47.png

Turning off the taskbar notification does not stop this pop-up.

Windows allows any number of services and apps and programs to start up when you login to windows. Not ONE other one that I use has a pop-up window that I have to manually click to clear to tell me it's running. That is just a very poor user interface and a very archaic coding (in my opinion).

I do think that your shortcut may be somewhat of a compromise however, and I thank you for that tip.

Regards and thanks.

You are welcome.

The little notification is one of those I find annoying for the reasons you mention - it should be easier (and cleaner) to squash it.  Yes, odd coding.

I have most everything that reeks of a notification switched off .  I do not live in ignorance - I keep an eye on my system using whatever tools are related to the task at hand.

For the purpose of completeness (for others who may be reading), the following collection includes a number of ideas that pretty much shuts down the constant whining by most of the Windows applications.   (I believe there are a couple missing - my notes are perhaps incomplete.  Meh.)

Notifications - Stop the Onslaught

Method - Switch off Notifications (Windows 10)

Settings > System > Notifications and actions >

Under Notifications, set the following to OFF

Method - Switch off Selected Notifications (Windows 10)

Settings > System > Notifications and actions >

Under Notifications

Switch ON Get notifications from apps and other senders

Scroll down to the list of "apps" > switch on / off each application

Optional:

Switch OFF Show me the Windows Welcome experience...

Switch OFF Get tips, tricks, and suggestions as you use Windows

Method - Printer Notifications (Recent versions of Windows)

Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers >

Left-Click one time on Printer > (top ribbon) Print Server Properties >

Tab Advanced > UNCHECK the following

  • Show informational notifications for local printers
  • Show informational notifications for network printers

OK

Method - Printer Notifications – Device Manager

Method - Stop Notification pop-ups when invoking the product

Synopsis

Avoid use of offending software by ensuring the product is not called unless it is deliberately opened.

For example, avoid program pop-ups issued from built-in / factory installed PDF:

HP Update Software - Retired

Excerpted:

HP Update, also known as the HP Software Update Utility, has been retired and is no longer providing new software updates. When HP Update checks for updates, a No new updates available message displays.

HP recommends uninstalling HP Update with the Uninstall a program feature in Windows.

Side Bar:  This little application will likely sneak back onto your computer if / when you (re)install the printer software.  This is especially likely if the printer software is older than the date of the retirement for the application.  Rats.  Just check Programs and Features for HP Update and uninstall it (again).

Method - HP Support Assistant (HPSA) Shut off Automatic Updates and Control Messages

Open the HPSA program

Open Settings (wheel)

To shut off the automatic updates:

Click " + More Options"

Select "Check for updates, but let me choose which updates to download and install"

OR

Select "Never check for updates"

The second choice (Never) is fine if your computer is older, if there are not usually HP software and drivers available for your machine, or if you just don't want anything to do with it.

Scroll down...

In Section: Choose how you would like to be notified

Check one or more of the boxes

OR

Uncheck any or all of the boxes (to keep the software from bugging you)

Method - HPSA - Remove unwanted devices

  • Open the HPSA program
  • If you are not logged in, do so (Depending on how you have it set up, you might be able to use your HP Community login / password)
  • Click the last tab on the HPSA menu - this is likely your first name or the name you use to log in
  • Scroll down
  • View the "My products" list
  • If there is something (a computer or other device) on the list you wish to remove, Click Edit this device
  • One of the "edit" choices should be "remove this device" (You can also add a Nickname to the device in "edit".)
  • If you make changes, click "Save" to save those changes and exit the edit menu

Bonus - completely UNRELATED to pesky notifications...
