Unable to Send or Receive Fax from Mac

I have never been able to set up my Mac or the Printer to send or receive fax directly from my Mac. The fax machine shows up in Printer and Scanner dialog box but there is no Fax interface, nor is there an option to Fax PDF under the printer dialog boxes.

(My fax number is normally shown but I wiped it out for privacy)

I have already tried reset printing system, downloading and installing the most updated driver found on HP (June 2017) and make sure that the HP Utility is used and not just secure air print. Nothing changed and I am still unable to send or receive faxes. 

Can one fax directly from the Mac with the M227dw??

I understand that you have an HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M277dw printer. I read that you're unable to set up my Mac or the Printer to send or receive fax directly from your Mac. I have read your post and truly appreciate the steps you have performed and have certainly done a good job.

Firstly, I would like to know if the printer is able to send and receive the faxes directly from the printer itself.

I suggest you to go through the HP Fax Test if the fax is already setup on the printer. In case the fax is not yet setup then please setup the fax first by referring to the steps mentioned on page# 67 of the user guide.

I've had the printer for over a year and I have had no issues with sending or receiving faxes on the machine itself. I'm just hoping to have to print less paper if I could do everything directly from the Mac.

Any further insight you can offer is truly appreciated.

I did some research on this and found that there are no full featured drivers available for Mac OS 10.12 Sierra. For Fax to work from the Mac the basic requirement is the full featured drivers without which it does not work.

There are only basic print drivers available that serve the printing purpose only.

Hi,

I'm afraid the drivers for Mac OS 10.12 are not being programmed as of now by HP for this printer and I do not see any such plans. However, in future, if HP plans to make the drivers then they can be downloaded through the printer updates from the HP website.

I have the same problem in El Capitan. Since there are no plans to create the driver that brings up the fax dialog on Mac OS, why does the user guide provide detailed instructions for faxing specifically from a Mac (see below)?

Even worse, the driver displays a "print" button and allows us to send the document to the print queue, which then processes the document and lists it as "completed," leaving us wondering if something was actually faxed, and to whom! I just spent 45 minutes trying to figure out what was wrong, when it would have been so easy to tell us in the guide that it can't be done (or where to go to find out if that situation has changed). This shows disrespect for Mac users' time.

To send a standard fax from the computer (OS X):

1. Open the document on your computer that you want to fax.

2. From the File menu in your software, click Print.

3. Select the printer that has “(Fax)” in the name.

4. Enter a fax number or a name from your Contacts that already has a fax number entry.

5. When you have finished filling out the fax information, click Fax.

The message string says SOLVED, but it doesn't seem solved.

To fax a non-printed document (PDF file, for example), I go to:

Print->(Choose the All-in-One Printer/Fax)->Printer...->Show Details

This brings up the Fax Information field: Fax Information, Fax Options, Layout...

Enter the Fax Number (and any prefix, but from home, it's normally just like any long distance call)

That works for me, though I can't find a way to send a Sheet Feeder document without doing it at the All-in-One itself.
