Windows 11 computer.  Attempting to scan using Wi-Fi to a .PDF from HP Smart.  The preview of the scan looks OK but when I save it to the desktop, I get error: " There was an error opening this document.  The file is damaged and could not be repaired.

I can scan  successfuly using HP Scan but I must  be tethered to the computer using t he USB.

I am about to  take a baseball bat to this printer very soon.  HP printers used to be a dream to set  up . Now  it's clunky and a real chore.

Welcome to the HP Community --

I cannot see that you included your printer model.

If you did so, the post failed to include the information.

HP Smart is still available (not yet replaced) in Windows.

In general, HP Smart can scan and save content to standard PDF file format.

If you have a printer model on which the optional HP+ service contract has been enabled -- or one of the eligible non-HP+ models,  HP Smart adds premium print and scan features to the application actions.

True

If, for any reason, the content cannot be fully or properly translated by the application, the output might not save or perhaps cannot be opened as expected.

If not tried...

Try / Consider

If you believe the printer is at fault, try a Power Reset, should such be useful on your printer model.

Perhaps Restart the printer and your computer.

Remove the printer from the app > Restart the computer > Open HP Smart > Add the printer

AND

As a test, perhaps scan a single sheet of paper on which there is simple text but no unusual entries (for example, avoid any content that includes bar codes or scan codes).

The destination might not make the difference -- In Windows, "Desktop" is simply another folder that includes the added "on screen" display features for the various shortcuts and programs located in the folder.  Regardless, perhaps try saving your simple PDF test document to a different local folder in your account.

What else?

Less common --  Likely NOT the case when HP Scan works --

Some content cannot be scanned and then saved due to inbuilt security that was added (by the author) to the original document.  For example, some documents, including those from certain Government or Insurance agencies, might not be able to be scanned at all, might be able to be scanned as PDF, or cannot be scanned as a "completed form".  Check for this type of security at the agency that provides the form or content you are trying to scan.
