Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

Envy 5000 all-in-one
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi. I've setup this printer hour the first time. Printer is now ready and printing fine. I have the HP smart scan installed on Android and Windows 10 (not liking this app whatsoever)

Scanning a written document to my android worked as it should under normal scanning mode. I'm now trying to use webscan on pc and nothing is happening. I have enabled webscan. I have clicked 'start scan' box appears saying 'starting webscan' and that it will open up a new browser. I click on OK and I can hear the printer in action for a brief few seconds. Then nothing. No scan shows up on screen or in a new browser window. The box still is there saying 'starting webscan' the printer did say scanning when I clicked OK but has stopped. I am stuck at this window and can only remove it by closing HP smart (or not so smart)

It's taken me a while to set this up with accounts etc which I hate. Why do they get something that was simple and worked and then go and make it difficult?

@new member...

Welcome to the HP Community.

If you are using Windows 10,

Try / Consider

HP Smart Windows includes a Scan Photos / Scan Documents (PDF) option.

True, Webscan - called from the Embedded Web Server (EWS) - can be reached from within HP Smart.

Webscan is not actually part of the HP Smart application.

Why does Webscan not work in your browser / environment?

I don't know.

It is likely a permission error of some kind.

If you want something else to try that is also outside of the HP Smart application,

Consider HP Scan and Capture (this application does require the full driver printer software is installed).

Information later in this message...

====================================================================================

What else?

There are other Scan options, including those provided in the HP Smart application.

Example - HP Smart Windows - Main Menu

HP_Smart_W10_Main_Menu_3HP_Smart_W10_Main_Menu_3

If you have not done so,

Install the Full Feature Software / Full Driver printer software.

==============================================================================

The full driver provides the foundation on which other programs and printing software depend.

Preparation

If you have not done so,

In addition to the HP Smart application,

Install the Full Feature Software / full driver printer software for the printer.

HP Smart and other print software / applications benefit from having the full driver installed.

Printer Software Check

Notes

If the full driver printer software is installed, you will see the printer listed in Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features.

The installation of the printer software adds two shortcut icons to the Desktop.

The Printer Assistant is named for the printer and provides access to Print , Scan , and Tools

Printer software not installed?

NOTE:  If the printer software is installed but not working,

Uninstall the printer software from Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features

Restart the computer and log in

Install a fresh copy of the Full Feature Software / Full Driver printer software

Restart the computer and log in

Method - Use the Easy Start Wrapper to Install the Full Feature / Full Driver Software

For printers that support the option,

Use the Easy Start wrapper to install and configure the printer software.

  • Home Page - HP Easy Start
  • Open Category Software and Drivers
  • Topic: Software-Utility
  • Download-and-Save  the current version of the Easy Start wrapper to install your print software
  • If using USB:  Disconnect the USB cable between the printer and computer before installing the software.
  • Right-Click on the downloaded package and "Run as Administrator" to start the installation
  • When asked, Select to install the “Full Driver” / “Full Feature Software”
  • If using USB:  Connect the cable when instructed to do so (near the end of the installation process).
  • After the software is installed, Restart the computer and log in.

Notes >> Easy Start... The Journey

  1. Full Administrator Rights are required to complete the HP Software installation.
  2. About 2/3 of the way through the setup, you will be given the opportunity to select the software - select the "Full Driver" set (as opposed to the basic driver or other application).
  3. You can skip / ignore suggestion(s) that you add the HP Account – you’ll need the account at some point, for now, you can skip this suggestion (as many times as it insists it’s a good idea) during the full driver software installation.
  4. If you see it, you can skip / ignore suggestion(s) regarding Instant Ink subscription.  Instant Ink subscription is NOT mandatory.
  5. Full driver includes print and scan functions supported by your printer and provides the printer features on which other applications / software might depend.

More Scan Options -

Note:  Some of these do require that the Full Driver is installed...

Does not work?  Try something else...

Webscan – located in the Embedded Web Server (EWS) – No additional software

NOTE:  Webscan feature  is not available on Laser printers

If the printer is on the network,

If the EWS feature is available on your printer,

First Time Use Only:  Enable Webscan

  • Open your favorite browser > type / enter Printer IP address into URL / Address bar
  • Tab Settings > Security > Administrator Settings > Enable >> Check box next to Webscan
  • Click Apply to save any changes

Use Webscan

  • Open your favorite browser > type / enter Printer IP address into URL / Address bar
  • Tab Scan > Webscan
  • Set up Webscan the way you want it - for example, set the Source to ADF
  • Click Start Scan to scan your document / image using Webscan
  • After the scan is complete, Save the scan to your computer.

What else?

If the Full driver is installed,

If your native HP Scan does not provide all the settings you like,

Consider / Try adding...

HP Scan Extended

  • HPSE is a subset an older Full Feature Software suite.
  • HPSE features are very similar to the HP Scan Software released after 2015.

    • OPTIONAL:  Add HP Scan Extended shortcut to Taskbar / Send to Desktop / Pin to Start
      • Open File Explorer > Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\HP\HP Scan Extended\bin
      • Right-Click HPScan.exe > Select Pin to Taskbar

  • HP Scan Extended features include (and are not limited to): Single, Multiple scans, Image and PDF scans, Email as PDF / JPEG, Source selection, Page Size choices include Auto-Detect (extracts image / document boundary).  Might include OCR (Save as Editable Text).
