When I scan/copy a document using the document feeder I get a single thin black line down the center of the page. When I scan/copy a document placed on the glass (one page at a time) the black line does not appear. What is causing this? Any way to fix it?

Hi @GloboJoel
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.
The thin black line appearing when using the document feeder is a common issue caused by dirt, smudges, or scratches on the small strip of glass used for scanning through the feeder.
When you use the flatbed scanner, the larger glass is used, which is why the issue doesn't occur in that mode.
Here's how you can fix it:
Steps to Resolve the Issue:
Clean the ADF Scanner Glass:
- Open the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) lid to access the narrow strip of glass located next to the main flatbed scanner glass.
- Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water or glass cleaner to gently clean the strip.
- Pay close attention to any smudges or debris, as even a tiny speck can cause a black line.
Inspect the ADF Rollers:
- While cleaning the glass, check the rollers in the ADF for dust or debris.
- Use a soft, damp cloth to clean the rollers gently.
Shine a Light for Better Visibility:
- If the black line persists, shine a flashlight at an angle along the glass strip. This can help you spot any stubborn marks or scratches that might not be visible otherwise.
Test the Scanner:
- After cleaning, scan or copy a blank sheet of paper using the document feeder to check if the black line is gone.
Check for Scratches:
- If cleaning doesn’t resolve the issue, inspect the glass strip for scratches. Scratches can cause permanent lines, and in such cases, the glass may need to be replaced.
Update Firmware:
- Ensure your printer’s firmware is up to date. Visit the HP Support website to download and install the latest updates for your printer model.
