It seems as though the printer is working ok but after unplugging and replugging the power cord, the RED X is lit. I cannot find any information about why it might have done that in my booklet nor do I see photos of it anywhere. What does it mean and how do I defeat it?

A warm welcome to HP forums! This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips to your technical queries.
The X (Cancel) button on the printer control panel is used to stop a print job, exit a menu or exit settings. Normally the X(Cancel) button is lit when there is print job send to the printer or a menu is open on the printer control panel display. Removing the ink cartridges and power resetting the printer may resolve the issue, let's try these steps:
1) Make sure this printer is plugged into a direct wall, not a surge protector
2) Remove all of your ink cartridges from the printer and close the door
3) Remove the power cord from the back of the printer (Do no press the power button)
4) Plug the power cord back into the printer
5) Wait for the printer to turn on completely, then install the ink cartridges.
Let me know how it goes!

Thank you for your reply and ALL the information you gave but let me just say this. All that needed to be done was to unplug it & replug it into the outlet - which I did from the back of the printer and not the outlet. This printer has been working properly for years and I pulled the plug the other day which connects the printer to my PC - that is when the RED X appeared. I knew I had seen it before - but that was some time ago...in fact so long ago I hadn't remembered what it was. Too bad it's not labeleld. Anyway - I know you people love to give what I call overkill on solutions so I tried the obvious first. All that info is valuable under the right conditions but not all. Unplugging and repluging in into the same surge protecter it's been in for years is what worked. Thanks very much for your help!
