Will not print anything with numbers

Current printer HP Office Jet 5212-will not print anything with numbers.  Tried printing W2's, postage labels, excel files with no luck.  Not sure if it's the printer or computer.  Thoughts?

Could be a more than one thing going on and causing the result you are seeing.

If not Windows

Export your files to PDF and try printing that.

Print the data as an Image - this might mean you have to snip / capture  the content, save it as an image (.JPG) file, and then print using your device and (perhaps) HP Smart Mobile.

If Windows...

The document types you mention require that the Full Feature Software be installed.

If the printer software is not installed - or, if it is installed but not working - files can fail to print correctly.

Basic Instructions - Install the Full Feature Software / Full Driver printer software

Preparation

• If using VPN, shut it off to install software.  NOTE >> If you don’t know what this is, you are not using a VPN – ignore this part.

• If the printer software is still / already installed, Uninstall the printer software  from Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features > Restart the computer and log in – Reference Uninstall HP printer software and drivers

After the printer software is uninstalled, check that the printer is not still lurking in Devices and Printers. 

 If the printer is listed, Right-Click on the printer and "Remove" > Restart the computer and sign in.

• Reminder:  If using USB cable between printer and computer, disconnect the cable before installing software.  Later... Connect the cable when instructed (near the end of the installation procedure).

Installation

• Download and Save the Full Feature Software installation package or the Easy Start Software
• Open File Explorer
• Navigate to the folder in which you saved the installation file  (likely Downloads)
• Right-Click on the installation package and “Run as Administrator”
• If using Easy Start > When asked, opt for "Full Driver" (exact wording might vary).
• If using Easy Start > Skip any extra software / offers you do not want (wording varies).
• After the software is installed, Restart the computer and log in

Preparation > Check / enable the printer as the “Default Printer”

Settings > Devices > Printers and scanners

UNCHECK (clear box) Let Windows manage my default printer

Select (Left-Click) your printer from the list of printers > Manage > Set as Default

Printing from Word or other Office software

Printing Office software documents requires the Full Feature software (for Windows).

Not every font is supported.

If using an "odd font" , consider changing the fonts in the document to a standard font.

If you are fond of your fonts - whether or not they are "odd" -

Export the document to PDF and print that.

What else?

Even with the printer software installed, printing certain file types might fail if the printer cannot translate the content into something it understands.

One "easy" workaround if printing something on your browser / screen

Snip content from the screen

Avoid Screenshots altogether – Capture what you want from the screen.

Create a Snip of the information on the page > save the snipped image as a .jpg file > print that file.

If you are printing a PDF file and the content is not "translating"

Try / Consider

PDF - Print as Image

Reinstall / Update your PDF Reader (Adobe Reader DC /Optional  Foxit Reader)

• HINT:  Watch out for and UNCHECK unwanted extra software
• Adobe Reader DC software should be installed even if you do not open / view / print PDF files directly from the software.

If the file will not print due to unusual content (odd fonts, color schemes, tables, other oddities), print the file as an Image.  Image printing does not require the printer software to translate file content.

• Save the document to your computer
• Open the offending document in Adobe Reader DC

• Click Print icon > Set other options on the menu > Click Advanced button

• Set the printer select the colors (Optional)
• Select Print the PDF file as an image
