This printer scanned the first 10 pages of my tax documents. But after that it now says that my document feeder is empty. So I'm scanning 45 pages one by one. This is a new printer in the last 4 months. and so far it sucks especially for scanning. This is a huge pain. What a waste of money.
- I've cut my computer on and off.
- I downloaded new software and it didn't load but when I checked it said firmware was up to date
- I have made sure the paper is properly in the feeder, adjusted the guides etc
- I have looked for jams (none)
- I've cut the printer on and off twice, unplugging it, waiting 2 minutes and restarting
- I tried scanning from the app on my mac and I tried scanning from "system settings" and the same issue

Hi @annemoss,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
It sounds like your HP Smart Tank 7602 is having trouble recognizing documents in the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) after scanning the first 10 pages. Since you've already tried basic troubleshooting, here are some advanced steps to fix it:
Since the printer is not detecting paper, the ADF sensors might be dirty.
- Turn off the printer and unplug it.
- Open the ADF cover and gently wipe the sensors with a dry microfiber cloth.
- Look for tiny paper dust or debris blocking the sensors.
- If needed, use a slightly damp (not wet) cloth with distilled water to clean the rollers.
- Close the ADF and power the printer back on.
Reset the Printer
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from power.
- Hold the power button for 30 seconds to drain residual charge.
- Wait 5 minutes, then plug it back in and power it on.
- Try scanning again.
Force the Printer to Recognize the ADF
- Open the HP Smart App on your Mac.
- Go to Scanner → Source: Document Feeder (ADF).
- Try scanning only 1-2 pages first, then increase the number of pages.
- If it still doesn't work, try scanning in grayscale (sometimes color scanning causes issues).
Check the ADF Sensors Using the Printer’s Built-in Tools
Some HP printers have a diagnostic test:
- On the printer screen, go to Settings → Printer Maintenance → Clean/Check ADF.
- If this option is missing, print a Printer Status Report (Settings → Reports).
Scan in Batches of 5-10 Pages
Since it worked for the first 10 pages, the ADF may be overheating or failing to register a large batch. Try scanning in smaller batches:
- Scan 5-10 pages at a time.
- After each batch, remove all pages, close the ADF, and reopen it before loading the next set.
Reinstall HP Software Manually
If the issue persists, reinstall HP Easy Start manually:
- Uninstall HP Smart from your Mac.
- Download HP Easy Start from HP’s website.
- Reinstall HP Smart and set up the printer again.
- Try scanning.
Let me know how it goes.
