Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,

I have an HP Photosmart 3310 that I'm trying to use the lovely flatbed scanner to digitize some records.  I understand that this model is retired, and that HP dropped the driver support in Windows 11, but I still have a functioning Windows 10 system to use for this.  I got the printer defined, and the printing function seems to be working, but when I bring up WIndows Fax & Scan application, and select "New Scan", it isn't finding the 3310.  I can ping the IP address for it, so I know it's up and running on the network, but the app can't find it.  I checked to make sure the Windows Image service and the print spooler are both running, started and automatic start is selected.   I wanted to reinstall the printer driver, or reinstall the entire software package for the printer, but HP doesn't have any of that available any longer.  I installed HP Print and Scan doctor 5.7.4, and it can see the printer is installed but it can't communicate with it for some reason.  Any suggestions appreciated.

Hi @joecutus ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with your Windows fax & scan not recognizing HP Photosmart 3310 scanner in Windows 10 Not to worry I will help you to get a resolution to the issue.

Here are steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue where Windows Fax & Scan is not recognizing your HP Photosmart 3310 scanner on Windows 10:

1. Verify Network Connection

  • Confirm that your HP Photosmart 3310 is connected to the same network as your Windows 10 PC.
  • Since you can ping the IP address, the connection seems active, but double-check if the printer's network settings (e.g., static IP, subnet mask) are correct.

2. Enable the Scanner in Windows

  • Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  • Check if the HP Photosmart 3310 is listed as a Printer and a Scanner. If it's only listed as a printer:
    1. Right-click the device, and select Properties or Scan Properties.
    2. Ensure the scanner function is enabled.

3. Reinstall Drivers Using Windows Update

Even though HP does not provide drivers for this retired printer, you can use Windows' built-in drivers:

  1. Disconnect the printer from your computer.
  2. Go to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, and uninstall any existing HP software for the Photosmart 3310.
  3. Reboot your PC.
  4. Reconnect the printer via USB or network.
  5. Windows should automatically download and install the drivers via Windows Update. If it doesn’t:
    • Open Device Manager > Right-click the printer > Update Driver > Search automatically for updated driver software.

4. Use the Windows Scan App

If Windows Fax & Scan isn’t recognizing the scanner:

  1. Open the Windows Scan app (free from the Microsoft Store).
  2. Check if the app detects the Photosmart 3310 as a scanner.

5. Run HP Scan and Capture

Since HP Print and Scan Doctor detects the printer but cannot communicate, try HP Scan and Capture:

  1. Download and install HP Scan and Capture from the Microsoft Store.
  2. Open the app and try to scan.

6. Manually Add WIA Support

Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) is essential for scanning:

  1. Open Services (press Win + R, type services.msc).
  2. Locate Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
    • Ensure it's running and set to Automatic.
    • Restart the service.

7. Use TWAIN Scanner Interface

Your scanner may require a TWAIN-compliant scanning application:

  • Install and use a free TWAIN scanner application, like NAPS2 or IrfanView.

8. Configure IP Address for Scanning

If the printer is on the network:

  1. Note its IP address (displayed on the printer’s control panel or through your router).
  2. Open Windows Fax and Scan > Tools > Scan Settings.
  3. Add a new scanner and manually input the printer’s IP.

9. Test With Another Scanning Application

Sometimes compatibility issues arise with Windows Fax & Scan. Alternatives include:

  • VueScan (third-party software with extensive scanner support).
  • NAPS2 (free and open-source).

10. Reset Printer and Network Settings

If none of the above steps work:

  1. Reset the printer to factory settings (refer to the printer manual).
  2. Reconnect it to your network.
  3. Add the printer and scanner back to Windows 10.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
