HP OfficeJet 6958 All-in-One Printer

A couple of weeks ago my printer started sending a message through HP "Smart" that it couldn't scan from this "all-in-one" printer. I've tried downloading drivers, restarting both computer and printer and anything else that HP "support" suggested.  Any ideas?  I'm almost hoping that the answer is "throw this printer out" - the support, quality, UI, etc.  is horrible

Hi @sCOTT2267,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

I hear you loud and clear, when an all-in-one suddenly turns into a print-only, it’s enough to make anyone question their life choices. You’ve done the heavy lifting with troubleshooting, yet the scanner remains stubborn. But don’t worry, I’m here to help get it back on track!

Restart Everything

  • Turn off the printer, computer, and Wi-Fi router.
  • Wait 60 seconds, then turn them back on.

Check HP Smart & Windows Scan

  • Open HP Smart → Click Scan.
  • If it doesn't work, try Windows Fax & Scan (Windows) or Preview app (Mac).

Use HP Print and Scan Doctor (Windows Only)

  • Download HP Print and Scan Doctor from HP’s website.
  • Run the tool and follow on-screen fixes.

Check Scanner Drivers

  • Uninstall all HP software from your computer.
  • Reinstall HP Full Feature Software from HP’s official site.

Use a USB Connection (If Wireless Fails)

  • Connect via USB and check if scanning works.

Reset the Printer

  • Unplug the power cable for 60 seconds, then plug it back in.

I know dealing with this can be frustrating, but let’s not give up just yet. We’ve got a few more tricks up our sleeve to get your scanner back in action. Stick with me, I’ll make sure we get this sorted for you!
