When I scan the app gives my file a name automatically which includes words like "photo" or "handwritten" which do not apply to what I scan. On my other Mac, which has Catalina, I was able to stop it from doing this and just have the date time etc file name. I found where I can turn off auto rotate, which is also never correct, but not the file name switch.

Hi @whitetrndo,
I'd like to help!
To better assist -What application are you using to scan, HP Scan, or HP Smart?
Meanwhile, you may refer to How to scan with an HP printer
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

I have been trying to install the latest firmware all day but my Mac book won't install it. My iMac (before it locked up due to the latest Catalina update) worked fine. My Mac Book doesn't run Catalina it is still on Mojave Version 10.14.6. Does this have anything to do with it?

You install the printer firmware using the printer display itself.
Refer - HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer
Hope this helps!

I followed the instructions you sent. My printer says "The most current updates have already been installed. No new updates are available at this time."
Thank you for all your effort. Don't work too hard on this. It is an inconvenience not a real problem. If you come across an answer let me know but don't work too hard on it.
Thank you again,
Nancy

HP Smart app does not allow such functionality, the filename is preconfigured and cannot be changed. Try installing HP Easy start (under the Software and Utility tab) and on HP Easy scan you may go to advanced settings and check for the option if available or while saving the document, you get an option to rename it.
Hope this helps!
