Fax has its own rather long chapter in the user guide.

One of the important requirements is a working (telephone) landline and a two-wire phone cord (typical landline phones connect to the phone service using a 4-wire cord).

Once configured at the printer, and making allowance for noisy phone line (perhaps edit the settings to slow the transmission speed), the fax hardware should be able to at least attempt a send.
