Hi @schwenks

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I understand that your HP OfficeJet 8600 scanner is not appearing on your Mac, and you would like to enable both printing and scanning. I kindly request that you follow the troubleshooting steps below to resolve the issue.

Connect the printer to the same Wi-Fi network

  • Make sure your Mac and the OfficeJet 8600 are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
  • On the printer's touchscreen, go to Wireless or Network settings and verify it is connected.

Remove any existing printer (if already added)

  • Open System Settings (or System Preferences on older macOS).
  • Go to Printers & Scanners.
  • Select the HP OfficeJet 8600 and click Remove Printer (-).

Add the printer using AirPrint

  • In Printers & Scanners, click Add Printer (+).
  • Select HP OfficeJet 8600 from the list.
  • Ensure the Use: field says AirPrint (or Secure AirPrint).
  • Do not choose Generic PostScript or Generic PCL.
  • Click Add.

Install and open HP App

  • Download and install the HP App from the Mac App Store if you haven't already. https://www.hp.com/us-en/hp-app/overview.html
  • Open HP App
  • Click Add Printer and select your OfficeJet 8600.
  • Once added, you should see both Print and Scan options within the app.

Scan using macOS

Even if HP Smart doesn't show scanning, macOS includes built-in scanning support:

  • Open Printers & Scanners.
  • Select HP OfficeJet 8600.
  • Click Scan > Open Scanner.
  • Place your document on the scanner glass or in the automatic document feeder (ADF) and start the scan.

Hope this helps, Please revert if the issue persists.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
