HP OfficeJet Pro 6960
macOS 10.12 Sierra

I have HP OfficeJet Pro 6960 last year. I have used this printer less than a year. First half a year, it was working well. I really liked it. But currently, I am having connection problem.

When I try to  print out something from my mac, it says the printer is offline. But the printer is on and connected with fiwi. Also, when I try to scan something to my mac, the printer says "no compter found."  On my mac with using HP easy scan app, I tried to scan, but the messsage comes out "HP OfficeJet Pro 6960 is currently unavailable. Please check if it is turned on and connected, or try again later." I did tried with different computer, it didn't work as well. I have a brandnew internet modem with high speed internet. I did removed the printer from my compter and added it. It only worked one time. Same issue happens again. So definitely, it's printer's problem.

The problem started half a year ago. It worked when I turned off printer or disconected power cable and restart it. But now, it doesn't work . I have to re-input wifi password every single time I print out or scan something. It's wasting time. Is there any way to solve this problem?

or Does HP OfficeJet Pro 6960 only work half a year and should I get a new printer now? In that case, I definitely don't want to purchase HP product again.

Hi @yukiusagi,

Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community! I came across your post and wanted to assist you. I understand you are having connectivity issues on your HP OfficeJet 6960 printer.

First, make sure the printer is connected to the network. Just check the blue wireless light on the printer. If the wireless light is blinking, then you need to connect the printer to the network first.

You can follow the instructions here to setup the printer to the network: http://hp.care/2dRx1fL

If the wireless light is solid blue, then the printer is connected to the network. Now follow the steps below and perform Reset Printing System on Mac:

  • Click the Apple menu icon, and then click “System Preferences”.
  • Click “Printers and Scanner” / “Print and Scan” or “Print and Fax”.
  • Right-click the blank space in the Printers list, and then click “Reset printing system”.
  • Click “Reset” in the confirmation window.
  • Enter an administrator username and password, and then click “OK”.
  • Wait until the printing system is reset and no devices show in the Printers list
  • Restart your computer and then go back to System preferences – Printers and scanners.
  • Click the “Add button” (+).
  • Find, and then select the name of your printer from the printer list, and then click “Add” to add your printer.
  • Click “Print Using...”, and then select the name of your printer (By default “Airprint” would be selected)

If the light is steady blue, which means the printer is connected to the network. I would suggest the steps mentioned below to assign a manual DNS address which will help us fix the issue:

Obtain the IP address of the printer – You can touch the “wireless” icon on the printer control panel to get the IP address.

Type the IP address on your web browser to obtain the printer EWS page on your computer.

Go to "Network" tab - General - Select "Network protocols" - Select "Enable IPv4 only" (or similar) - Apply the settings.

Go to the “Network” tab – Click on “Wireless (802.11) – Then click on “Network address (IPv4)

Click on the radio button which says “Manual IP” and then click “Suggest a manual IP address” to give a manual IP address to your printer.

Click on radio button which says “Manual DNS Server” and under manual preferred type 8.8.8.8 and under manual alternate type 8.8.4.4 (This is Google DNS server address)

Restart the printer and the router and check.

Let me know if those steps worked for you.

If they did, that's awesome!

that'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!

Good Luck

Thanks for your answer but unfortunately these are not the answer what I'm looking for. As I mentioned at my last post, I do these process EVERY SINGLE TIME I print out. Not kidding. EVERY SINGLE TIME! If I need to print out something twice a day, I do these process twice. If I need to print out five different documents a day, I do these process five times a day. Dont you think this is waisting time? Don't you think this is ridiculous? My question is how I can avoid these process every single time I print out. I only use this printer a year. I really hope I can get proper solution soon. Thanks.

Hi @yukiusagi,

Thank you for replying,

I understand you have already tried these steps earlier and still having the issue. Don't worry as I have a few suggestions which should help you resolve this issue.

If your printer connected wirelessly, make sure to temporary connect the device with USB and then follow the link to check for the latest firmware update if available for your printer, using this website.

For reference, please follow this link: HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware

If you have followed the steps suggested and still having the issue. I would suggest you could try to create a new User account with administrator privileges and then once again try to assign static IP address and check if that helps.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.

Take care.

  • I got to this step. The "Add" printer window has no printers listed to select.
  •
  •
  • Click the “Add button” (+).
  • Find, and then select the name of your printer from the printer list, and then click “Add” to add your printer.
  • Click “Print Using...”, and then select the name of your printer (By default “Airprint” would be selected)
