Subject Line:

Converting to Word from PDF format requires software that is not generally included in standard printing software.

For example,

Acrobat (not necessarily the free versions) can do this.

Integrated OCR software automatically converts scanned text to editable text

For those reading:  Some printer models (that include the OCR feature) provide the option as a separate downloadable software (ReadIris)  located in the printer's Software and Driver Website Support pages.

Scan Basics

How to Scan (Windows)

Although the document is woefully dated in some ways, it does show the method to read the HP Scan Software from within the Printer Assistant (formally known as the Solution Center).  The illustration in section "How do I scan using HP Solution Center software" includes the "Convertible Text" (OCR) option in the menu.

Examples...

When the Full Feature Software is installed, a shortcut icon to the Printer Assistant is added to the Desktop.

Open the Printer Assistant > select tab Print, Scan & Fax

Select tab Scan

Select Scan a Document or Photo

Free versions of OCR are available.  Whether you use any of these is entirely a matter of choice.

For example, use your favorite search engine and search for "Free OCR software" or similar.
