Any error on the printer display when you try to copy or scan?
Could you also check the scanner bar functionality. In order to check the scanner bar functionality:
1.) Lift the scanner lid slightly, and then press the Copy button or icon.
2.) Check if the scanner light moves.

Thank you for your response. I did follow those instructions. when i pressed copy the bar did move left to right. a sheet of paper sounded as if loaded. the bar is remaining on the right side and is lit. on the screen the message reads " now copying page one 1/1, a blue lite is circling and circling and nothing is happenning. thats the way it has been. i have disconnected the plug and now have directly into wall socket. i did also shut off router. waited. disconnected power cord from unit. and restarted. same result. also did try a reset for factory.. same result. when i hit red x tocancel. just see blue cirling and bar remains on right side . thanks .. did read about a special reset but needs HP specific instructions. thanks for your help jim 4/26 at 11:33am

Since you have tried all possible steps, the only option left is to perform a semi full reset and re-initialize the printer. The reset instructions are specific for your printer and performing those steps on a different printer may brick the device.
