I have a Mac Operating System Sonoma 14.4.1 (23E224). Every time I scan it's crooked. In addition, I use to be able to straighten a crooked scan within the HP Smart program but that tool seems to have disappeared. How do I straighten a crooked scan now?

Hi @Jacqueline1938,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your scanned images are consistently appearing crooked and you're unable to straighten them using the HP Smart program, there are a few steps you can take to resolve this issue on your Mac OS Sonoma 14.4.1 system.

Steps to Address Crooked Scanning

Check the Scanner Alignment:

  • Ensure that the document you're scanning is placed straight on the scanner bed. Small misalignments can lead to crooked scans.
  • Check the hinges and the scanner lid for any issues that might prevent the scanner from closing properly.

Update Scanner and Printer Drivers:

  • Ensure that your HP scanner/printer drivers are up to date. Visit the HP website, find your model, and download the latest drivers for Mac OS Sonoma.

Reinstall HP Smart Software:

  • Uninstall and then reinstall the HP Smart software. Sometimes, updates or software corruption can cause features to disappear or stop functioning properly.

Using Mac's Preview App to Adjust Images:

  • Open the crooked scan with the Preview app on your Mac.
  • Click on the 'Tools' menu and select 'Rotate Left' or 'Rotate Right' to manually straighten the image.
  • Alternatively, use the ‘Rectangular Selection’ tool under ‘Tools’, select the area of the image, and then choose ‘Crop’ to adjust the alignment.

Check for Software Updates on Mac:

  • Go to System Preferences > Software Update and check if there are updates available for your OS that might improve functionality and compatibility with applications like HP Smart.

Using Other Software for Image Correction

If HP Smart no longer supports the straightening tool, you can use alternative software like Adobe Photoshop, GIMP (a free alternative), or other image editing tools that offer image rotation and straightening capabilities. Here’s a general guide on how to straighten an image using such software:

  • Open the image.
  • Look for a ‘Rotate’ or ‘Straighten’ tool. In Photoshop, you can use the ‘Ruler’ tool to draw a line that should be horizontal or vertical, and then choose ‘Image > Image Rotation > Arbitrary’ to automatically straighten the image based on that line.
  • Save the corrected image.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
