OfficeJet 7740
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Using the scanner with my officejet 7740, I preview the area to  be scanned.  I do not seem to have the ability to scan just a portion of the preview area.  It seems that I have to scan/save the whole area and then remove the unwanted portion using the edit feature

With my 8610, I could place 3-4 pics on the glass, preview the area, crop to just the first pic, scan and save it, then go back and crop to the second pic and so on.

Am I missing something?  is there no longer a way to crop a portion of the preview area and scan/save just that portion?

Hi,

From the HP Officejet Pro 7740 software select Scan a Document or Photo.

Select Save as JPEG and make sure the Scan Type is set as Photo.

Set the Scan Size as Auto Detect Size or Detect Photo.

You may click the Disk icon to save the settings as default for the shortcut.

Keep some spacing between one picture to another and press Scan, the images should be separated and cropped automatically.

Humm.  my screens do not look like you describe.

  HP Main screen.jpg  scan screen.jpg

However, when I look at my Wifes PC, her HP main screen does look as you describe.

So I guess that somehow mine was not installed correctly and I need to reinstall.  Should I uninstall, then install again?

The HP Smart app provides more limited functionality than the HP Software.

Follow HP Easy Start below, be sure to select the HP Basic Device Software or the HP Full Feature and Software option and complete the steps:

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/printers/HPEasyStart_11_0_4498_30.exe

Once completing the installation, open the HP Officejet Pro 7740 icon from your desktop, select Scan a document or photo and follow my previous steps.

I appreciate the help.  The link suggests I install using OJ7740_Full_WebPack_40.12.1161 which is what i installed on my Wife's PC and gives the proper scan menu.    When i try to install the full on  my PC, I get that smart one menu again.

So i tried to uninstall the HP software.  It is called the Basic Device Software, but it wont let me.  Say I dont have admin rights.  there is no admin on this PC.  I got it for xmas and just registered me (no one else) in the PC.

can you give me a link on how to uninstall and reinstall properly?  do I need to remove the devices too?

Thanks

Bill

Hi Bill,

Please clarify what exact error is shown, with an added screenshot if possible, there are different possible errors caused due to different reasons, therefore a clear description of the error message would be crucial to go any further to resolve the problem.

May you see any such error or any similar error by any chance?

The uninstall worked great. Tks.  I was able to reinstall the Full version  and it installed correctly showing the proper scan menu as you described above.  I test scanned a pic and it worked similar to my old HP 8610 as as you described.  You were great.

Oddly, it would not open a second time, so i ran the scan doctor and it works again.  works now

One last question.  When I scanned the photo, the highest resolution it would allow me in color photo was 300 ppi.  The 7740 specification says it will print up to 1200 ppi.  that is one of the reasons I bought the 7740 (it would scan to higher resolution that the old 8610).  300 ppi is not very good for photos. Is there way to get up to 1200 ppi  and i just did not see it?   I did click on the "more" arrow in the upper right corner of menu which took me to screen that would allow me to change scan resolution, but my only choices were 75, 100, 200 or 300.

You're much welcome @Bill3456.

From the HP Scan Software, change the Scan Source from Document Feeder (If Loaded) to Flatbed Glass, then higher scan resolutions will become available, as the top ADF is intended for socuments and only supports up to 300 ppi.
