deskjet F4400 series
macOS 10.12 Sierra

my F4400 scanned great before I updated my laptop to macOS 10.12 Sierra.

now everytime I want to scan using "printer and scanner" the scan utility would open and kept loading the message "waiting for scanner..." after a good 10,20 min the message disappear and nothing else happened.

Usually, "waiting for scanner" would pop up for a  min then F4400 started to make noises and scan an overview.

I checked my softwares in apple store and everything is up to date.

I even used HP easy scan and when I browsed F4400, the bar kept loading and never actually connect to the scanner.

what should I do to make my F4400 scanner works again?

(the scan button was long broken, so there is no hope in scanning using the button. every time I hit the scan button, the yellow blinker and power button would blink for 13 sec then stop. I tried every trick I found online but nothing helped. Then I found the built-in "printer and scanner" in my macbook pro and had to scan from my laptop. But now I can't even do this anymore)

Hi @Yoomyoom,

Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community! I came across your post and wanted to assist you. I understand you are having issues while scanning on your HP DeskJet Printer. Don't worry as I have a few suggestions which should help you resolve this issue.

I understand that you have an HP  DeskJet F4400 Printer and the HP Easy Scan does not work on Mac Sierra. You have uninstalled and reinstall the software. All other apps can communicate with the scanner and are able to import images from the scanner, except EasyScan. I appreciate you taking your valuable time to troubleshoot.

I recommend you to perform the following steps as a workaround:

  • I did some research and found that for this printer there are no full-featured drivers available for Mac Sierra.
  • However, in an Apple update there are inbuilt print and scan drivers available for this printer model. Please follow the below steps to install the Mac inbuilt printer drivers.
  • Please download the Mac inbuilt drivers from this link: http://hp.care/2flF56z
  • From System Preferences, click on Print & Scan.
  • Click the Plus sign.
  • Select the listed Deskjet F4400 series.
  • Click the drop-down menu next to Use or Print Using and click on Select Printer Software.
  • Select the Deskjet F4400 series from the list.
  • Click OK to confirm your selection and add the printer, then try printing using the configured print queue.

Post performing the above steps, you may try to use the Apple Image capture and test the scanning. I hope this information helps.
