Hello. I just purchased an HP OfficeJet Pro 9015e. I am trying to scan a duplex legal document using the automatic document feeder. I am using the HP Smart app on my HP Windows laptop. It does not work. Even though I told the app LEGAL document and TWO SIDED, it still only scans the doc on one side, and as an 8 1/2 X 11 doc. Please help.

Welcome to the HP Community Forum.

True - printer supports dual-pass 2-sided scan.

What I cannot find is confirmation that the printer will automatically scan Legal size documents as 2-sided.

It might not do so.

HP Smart - method

How to Scan – HP Document

HP Printers - How to Scan (Windows, Mac, Mobile) | HP® Customer Support

Step 2

Scan multi-page two-sided documents (Windows, Mac)

Use the automatic document feeder (ADF) and settings in HP Smart for Windows and macOS to scan documents with two sides and save them in a single PDF file.

  1. Load the two-sided document in the ADF.

  2. Click the Scan tile on the HP Smart app home screen.

  3. Select Document Feeder in the Source menu.

  4. Click Scan.

  5. After the first sides are scanned, remove the pages from the output tray.

  6. Without turning the pages over or changing the page order, load them back into the document feeder with the same leading edge. You might need to rotate the pages first.

  7. Click +Add to scan the other sides of the pages.

  8. In the preview window, drag and drop the pages in the order you want.

  9. Click Save, and then select Basic PDF as the file type to save the document as a single PDF file.

What else?

The Point:

If auto-scan of 2-sided Legal size works,

It might do so after installing the Full Feature Software / Universal Scan Software and using HP Scan.

If you have not done so,

Install the Full Feature Software -

After the software is loaded, Restart the computer and log in.

Next, install the Universal Scan Software -

After the software is loaded, Restart the computer and log in.

Very basic instructions and download location are includes in section (below)

References / Resources / Examples

Full Feature Software includes access to the printer features.

At least Two shortcuts are added to the Desktop:

Printer Assistant > Print, Scan, Tools -- The Desktop shortcut is named for the Printer.

HP Scan > Scan to PDF, Photo, Email -- The Desktop shortcut is named for the Printer.

Also supported on your printer:

The Universal Scan Software adds OCR libraries to installed HP Scan software.

and

The Universal Scan Software installs a nice HP Scan software.

The Universal Scan Software adds a HP Scan shortcut to the Desktop -- the Desktop shortcut is named "HP Scan".

Yes, it's confusing -- it makes more sense once the two software packages are installed and you can see the added shortcuts on the Desktop.   No, I cannot explain why both software programs have the same name.  Meh.

Try using HP Scan > Document > ADF if loaded > Legal size > 2-sided,

Which "HP Scan" to use?

Not sure - might not matter.

The HP Universal Scan "HP Scan" is worth trying --

I am able to set the (universal) HP Scan job for Document, ADF if loaded, 2-sided, Legal size Input, Legal Size output.

I've not tested whether the settings actually do what is expected.

General Example - (Universal) HP Scan > PDF > More > Scan

What if?

IF the printer won't scan both sides automatically,

Consider:  HP Scan (full driver printer software)

Set up to use "2-sided Manual"

Scan all the front sides of the document,

Return the stack to the ADF input,

Scan the second sides,

The software will (should) reorder the pages automatically.

General Example - HP Scan (full driver printer software) > PDF > More > Destination

Printer Software - Full Feature Software

If you have not done so, consider

If the software is already installed and you want to "reinstall":

Uninstall the printer software from Programs and Features

Restart the computer and log in

Check that all the pieces of the printer software have been removed - if anything is deleted, Restart computer and log in

Next,

Download, Save, (then) Install new copy of the printer software

After the software in installed, Restart the computer and log in
