Your printer does not support two-sided scanning, it only provides two-sided print capabilities.
You may perform Manual Duplexing from the HP Scan software provided with your printer software (Click the HP Laserjet M278-M281 icon, select Scan and click on Scan a document or Photo)
Click on More > and then set the Page Sides option to both sides, it will guide you to reload the pages into the feeder with the 2nd side facing up, then follow the steps to complete the scan and the pages will be reordered correctly.

Based on having no information about your printer / setup:
You can scan double-sided if your printer supports the feature.
Open Support Home
Enter the name of your device
When the website support page opens, Select a Category
For example, select category "Product Information" and look at the specifications for your printer.
You might also check in category "User Guides" and read the User manual for your printer.
In general,
- If the feature is supported, it may be available when using the ADF (Automatic Document Feeder).
- The option will likely show as supported in the software used to scan the document.

Hi,
Thanks for using the HP Support Community.
Duplex scanning depends on whether the printer model supports and has that feature.
What's your printer model?
Check out these resources, it shows 2 printer mdoels, one that has a Duplex scan feature and the other deosn't have but using the software, it automaticaly sorts the pages with a manual reload to scan the 2nd side of the document.
HP Officejet Pro 6960 / 6961 /6968 / 6966 : Scan a 6 pages 2 sided document using the ADF
(Non duplex scanner)
HP Officejet Pro 6970 series : Scan a 10 pages 2 sided document using the ADF
(Duplex scanner)
Thanks.
